Harder classes at my school than at other schools?

Do colleges consider the difficulty of courses when looking at gpa's? If my school's course is a lot harder than another's so I might have a lower gpa than a student who goes to a school that grades less stringently, will colleges take that into account? I'm an IB Diploma candidate, and for those of you who are also in IB, you must understand the expectations are so much higher...

And don't tell me SATs or AP scores can account for the difference, because the reality is, there will still be many people with the same SAT score as I who will have 4.0s when, at my school, that simply isn't possible because of how some advanced classes are run.

Colleges look at RANK along with GPA…if you are top 10% i wouldnt worry about GPA
now if your school doesnt rank, that maybe problematic

Schools know what it takes to get a high GPA at a top high school. And in A Is For Admission, Hernandez explains that they rank kids from schools that do not rank. You will be looked at in context.

Something that strikes me here, however, is that most seem to believe they attend highly competitive schools which is just not possible.
