Just a thread for ***** and giggles. Thought I'd hear what people think are the hardest classes they've ever took in college or grad school. Sometimes the name of the class is intimidating enough. Put this in the engineering area since most people go with the "engineering is hardest" thing so...name 'em!

Took partial differential equations as a high school senior … it was hard.

I studied structural engineering in college. Intro to Electrical Engineering was the hardest course I took! None of it made a lick of sense to me, even with a tutor.

Graduate Radiation (w/ Participating Medium), Turbulence and Advanced Engineering Analysis were brutal.

So far, the most brutal has been Perturbation Methods.

Imagine partial differential equations but much less mathematically sound and with much more black magic voodoo involved in coming up with the answer, and then you have Perturbation. Riiiiiiiiiiiidiculous. Of course some of the more complicated fluids problems pretty much require it to be solvable.

To be honest with you, I find my general ed classes harder because of my lack of motivation towards them… my hardest classes were chicano studies and asian american relations.

If it were engineering… I would say fluid dynamics.

Modern physics

The hardest classes I have ever taken was Statics and Dynamics. Looking back, the material was not so bad but at the time it was a shock because I was not used to that “level” of thinking. Also, my school used them as a weeder during sophomore year, so they made sure a lot of kids failed the class.

Statics and Dynamics confused me at first. When I transferred schools I used a different textbook and got A’s in the classes. The new books (author R.C. Hibbeler I think) showed me the correct ways to visualize mechanical problems. It was this visualization and intuition that I lacked the first time around.

My most difficult classes were computer programming. I just couldn’t get the hang of it, so I switched from computer science to mechanical engineering. I never took any electrical engineering classes but those appeared to be more difficult than CS.

One class that I HATED but was somewhat good at was chemistry.

I’d like to second Hibbler for Statics/Dynamics.

Gere for Mechanic of Materials
Moran and Shapiro for Thermodynamics
Fox/Munson for Fluid Dynamics

(UG Wise)

LOL, Slorg! I changed my answer from last time. I guess I have a short memory.

So far for me, it’s Mechanical Response of Engineering Materials.

english 1A

What about Ferdinand Beer for Statics or Sonntag for Thermodynamics?

I had Moran and Shapiro for Thermo and Fox/Munson for Fluids and had no problem whatsoever.

Random Processes, maybe? (Also called Stochastic Processes at some universities)

At the end of the course you were staring blankly at equations with like six greek letters in them…

Signals and Systems was pretty crazy, too.

I’m using Ferdinand Beer’s Static and Dynamics book too for my class… I’m hoping it goes okay.
So far, it was intro to programming with Fortran. OMG my mind can’t think in computer language even though I like computers. It made me realize that programming wasn’t right for me so I switched from CS to AE.

Mine was Engineering Materials, the freshman weeding-out course that I barely passed.

I change mine. It’s “Oil: International Evolution” now.
