Hardest sections on ACT?

I know certain people may be better at certain sections, but in general which are the most difficult sections to score a 36 on? Please rank them. Here is my ranking, from easiest to hardest.

Reading - Easiest
English - Easy
Science - Hard
Math - Hardest

From the comments, writing is the most difficult on both the ACT and SAT. Not great news for students writing essays as part of applications for college

Yeah, this fact almost completely determines “hardness.” For me at least, it was (easiest to hardest)

Math
English
Science
Reading

If you look at the percentiles, the order, from easiest to hardest, is reading, English, Math, Science.

English- Easiest (always a 32)
Reading- easy (29-32)
Math- hard (24-26)
Science-Hardest (24-25)

I am unable to express my hatred for the science section. I’m consistently scoring 24s or 25s on every official test and practice test I take, no matter what I do. I’d be lying if I said I’ve never contemplated the thought of just getting up and leaving right during the middle of the science test, that’s how much I hate it.

I’m not really good at math word problems. IDK why. I get As in all my math classes but I got a 31 on math for my first ACT.

Reading is easier than SAT CR but still a little hard.

Science is easy.

English is easy but harder than science.

But in my personal opinion: Science < Math < English < Reading

science = easiest
english
math
reading= hardest

for my son it went (from easiest to hardest):

English
Reading
Science (though he had a great score the first sitting - but the other two were inconsistent)
Math

The strange thing is my son is a pretty good math kid and he will be a STEM major. It was the early math concepts which tripped him up.

Writing was horrifying. :stuck_out_tongue:

For me, English is very easy, and the rest of the sections are moderate. However, my least favorites are Reading and Science… wish I could do those first! :stuck_out_tongue:

Math
English
Reading
Science

Reading and science are hardest for me because of the insane time constraint

For me, English and math are easiest and the ones I move the fastest through. I hate reading and science is okay. The two times I have taken it, I liked doing the English and thought I bombed the science. However, my scores are English-28, math-29, reading-33, and science-35. Also, the essay isn’t fun but it’s not as stressful because it doesn’t make as big of an impact.

@pitt2021

Agreed. I went into the essay with no preparation at all and still got a 32. If you know how to back up your argument, you should be fine.

From easiest to hardest: English, math, science, reading

@microssrunner17 How are you approaching the science section? It is generally similar to reading, just without the reading. You are looking for information in a passage to answer questions. The difference for science is you don’t actually have to read the passages (except for the scientist viewpoint passage, you might have to skim it).

@ManaManaWegi my main issue is never reading the labels of the graphs carefully, or getting stuck between two answers and circling the wrong one. Another thing is the time constraint so I just feel so rushed and don’t bother to double check my answer for fear of running out of time. Slowly but surely my score is improving by a point or two with each practice test (I’d prefer to have like a 5 point jump but I’ll take what I can get lol)

@microssrunner17 yeah, that is pretty much 80% of what the science section tests, so being able to read graphs accurately and quickly is very important.
Consider looking at some ACT science guides online, or maybe even an act science prep book.

There are some strategies on Youtube for taking the science section. My son raised his subscore substantially after implementing this strategy. @ManaManaWegi has pretty much described it, but there are several videos that are good.
