Hardest to Easiest Engineering Majors to Get Accepted Into

Aeronautical/Aerospace Engineering
Agricultural Engineering
Architectural Engineering
Biomedical Engineering
Civil Engineering
Electrical/Communications Engineering
Engineering - General
Environmental Engineering
Industrial Engineering
Manufacturing Engineering
Materials Engineering
Mechanical Engineering
Software Engineering

Just curious, but out of these majors at Cal Poly, which do YOU think have the highest applicants? What about the least? That probably correlates with the most competitiveness too.

I think that Aerospace, Architechtural, Civil, Computer (Software), Electrical, Industrial, Mechanical, and general Engineering are all the highest ranked, so therefore the most competitive. So I would assume (this is based on what I’ve read, I’m no expert) that Agricultural, Biomedical, Environmental, Manufacturing, and Materials would be less impacted by a small margain (though they are all fantastic programs). I know a guy who took Materials and said it was an absolutely fantastic program. Though, they all are really…

I don’t know how much this will help you. All I can say is that the deadline is fast approaching and you need to choose one that suits you and that interests you.

These Engineering Majors are a LOT different than one another! Unless you have absolutely no preference, you should apply to what you WANT to do, not what you have the best shot at.

Protip: Take a look at the change of major requirements for each major. The tougher those are, the more impacted the major. As the major is more impacted, admissions standards become harder.

Aerospace & Architectural are generally hard to get, rest are all the same. I am a Chemical Engineer, but I remember at other places, people who selected Aerospace got rejected, but were slotted into Mechanical.

What about materials engineering since it is such a small department?
