I am trying to decide between SRD and Hardin House. I have family members that have lived in both, and have already turned in my application for both dormitories. I am definitely planning on rushing in the fall and want to be surrounded by other girls in my sorority. I have heard that sometimes living in Hardin is beneficial towards getting into a top sorority. My boyfriend will be a sophomore and is a member of FIJI, so it would be nice to be close to his fraternity house. I have heard that SRD is much nicer, but I am hesitant, seeing as all of my friends from Camp Longhorn and Dallas have always lived in Hardin. I also think that Hardin has a better location for freshman because it is close to the drag and to university towers. I am not sure which to choose, but I know that contracts need to be returned soon!

My D preferred SRD over Hardin hands down, but that is simply just one students opinion. She sent her contract back the day she got it because she had made the decision in her mind months ago, and when we toured they told us that after contracts go out, it onkyntakes them a couple of weeks to close out.

My D lives in Hardin, however, her first choice was SRD which was full by the time we overnighted our contract. When she first decided to live at SRD there were 4 spots open. By the time they got her stuff, she was #13 on the waitlist. They told us that only 10 got off the waitlist the year before so we went to Hardin. My D likes Hardin although the food is supposedly much better at SRD. Her room is very big and she has a HUGE closet. We both really like the location of Hardin (West Campus) much better since most of the sorority houses are on West Campus and most of the weekend activities are also…which means within safe walking distance. The ladies that work/live in Hardin are very caring and my husband and I have been very happy with that.

Hardin is about 95% greek and I have heard that SRD is more like 60/40. My D has said that the couple of girls that she knows that did not pledge don’t like living among all of the sorority girls. If one is not planning to rush, then SRD would be a better choice.

Overall, Hardin has been great. It had alot of history with the University…in fact, Jenna Bush lived there when her dad was president :)

SRD is beautiful and would have been her first choice. but in hindsight, Hardin has been a great choice afterall.

i have heard that hardin has snobbier girls than scottish rite…is that true? srd seems nicer because it is one big house instead of separate ones and it is closer to actual campus and classes than hardin

There doesn’t seem to be anything like Hardin or SRD for men. What is up with that? Am I just not finding it?

Alot of the fraternity boys that want to live in a private dorm live in “the Towers”. My D said that it is crazy there though.

As far as Hardin being snobby, I am not sure about that. I would like to think that my D is a normal girl and so are her friends that live there
If you generalize and stereotype sorority girls then maybe you would think they are snobby. In our experience, there are all types of girls that live in Hardin, just as there are all types that live in SRD.

Hardin has different houses because unlike SRD, they were once individual houses/duplexes. I’m living there next year and all of my friends live there, they have MUCH better security than SRD and you get to know the girls better. Most of the houses have small kitchens where girls hang out and make stuff and yeah, the location is MUCH better also. I have friends at SRD and they like it too and I know people who are living there next year, but if you want to feel like you’re at home then Hardin is best.

What about the Karnes house at Hardin?

I lived in SRD all four years and loved it, but that was 30 years ago, lol! It was a convenient location for me since I was in engineering.

I agree with SWTCAT - there will be all types of girls in both dorms. I think the sorority percentage was higher at SRD when I lived there. I was about as non-sorority as you can get, but I quickly found several friends who I’m still in contact with.

I LOVED the swimming pool. By late February, we started hanging out there every year.
