Harker and SSAT

Hi all,

My DD took her first SSAT and scored 99% overall, 99% reading, 99% verbal, 92% in Math. She has great academics, extra curriculars, and hopefully good LORs from her teachers. Does anyone know what the average SSAT score for Harker is? Also, what is the acceptance rate? Someone indicated that the acceptance rate for Harker freshmen is 1:15. True? Considering the 92% in Math, should she submit this score to Harker or re-take SSAT ( or CTP-4)? I understand that SSAT is not the only factor that is considered, but we are just trying to see if she can improve her chances.

Thanks for your excellent guidance!

Those are really fantastic scores, you and your daughter should be very proud! There really is NO reason to retake the SSAT with scores like these. It would not make a difference. I have to admit, I had never heard of The Harker School before your post. I looked it up, and it is really impressive. Their facilities, and their record of sending semifinalists to Intel and Siemens competitions are quite amazing. The list of college matriculation stats for the past several years is an attention-grabber, too.

hs2018, your D’s SAT scores are fine. Is she applying to the Upper School? You should call the admissions office and ask how many spots open up for the upper school and the upper school admit rate, which is more useful info to you, and they should give you straight answers. On the other hand, I suspect the majority of applicants to Harker would have stellar academic profiles and I don’t see any “evidence” that the school is taking diversifying its student body as a priority, so the challenge for your D or for anyone is how to stand out in this competitive applicant pool. Which is one reason why many families choose to enroll their kids in the lower or middle school of a day school like Harkar so they will have a better chance of “reserving” a spot in upper school.

Thanks very much for your replies and helping a first-time parent who is going with high school applications. I will call the school to find out the admit rate. fingers crossed!!
