Harpur/SOM

Hi,

So I originally applied to the Harpur college, and then when a rep visited my high school she convinced me to want to try for the SOM. I emailed her, but I don't think my app was changed in time and i'm not sure which i was evaluated for. I would like to go to the SOM, so would I be able to pursue be re-evaluated, or how easy is it to transfer when already in the school.

thanks

Call the admissions office and figure out what school you’ve applied for. Then if necessary, they may be able to help you change the application over the phone.

They said that I would be better off attending Harpur and taking classes that could be used when applying to transfer to SOM. Does anyone know how hard it really is to transfer/if its worth it?

it’s kinda hard. I am working on it. I’m a freshman and I just submitted my application transfer to SOM. you have to take certain courses and stay one year in harpur in order transfer to SOM

do not attend harpur with the intention of tranferring to SOM…it can be done, but it is EXTREMELY difficult…

^ rodney, but let’s say in my position, I just applied to Bing as a transfer for next Fall, but as Harpur (I’ve been leaning towards SOM, but I’m not positive on anything as of now),
wouldn’t it be better to try to get into SOM by maybe getting accepted first through Harpur? Rather than straight out applying to SOM and possibly not even getting accepted at all?

it would make sense if Binghamton is your first choice school regardless of Harpur v SOM…but if you are set on business, the plan may be flawed given the few students who are able to transfer into SOM

I talked to an admissions rep, and she said that there are a few ways to transfer in, either to the graduate program or the school.
What makes you say its so hard? and when can you transfer?

It’s difficult because there are very few people transferring OUT of SOM. Therefore, there are less spots open for transfers. And if you don’t apply directly to SOM, you will need at least a semester in Harpur before applying for transfer.

to transfer into SOM you need 4 pre reqs.

Calc 1, Statistics, Micro Econ, Macro Econ.

I took all 4 first semester got a 4.0. Then got a 4.0 for the next 2 semesters. then I got in.

Idk why it was so hard for me. I know people who got in with a 3.2.

Make sure you get an A in those 4 classes. Apply after your first semester, and after your second, and after your third.

It doesn’t matter when you get in. Once you in SOM

the only classes you need to take are

calc 1, stats, micro and macro econ, acct 211 bls 111, cqs 111, cqs 311, mis 311, opm 311, mktg 311 mgmt 311, ibus 311, fin 311, mgmt 411.

if your majoring in acct you need bls 112 and like 5 acct classes
if your majoring in something else you need acct 212 and 3 classes in your concentration.

it is possible to (and most people do) complete all of the requirments for SOM in 3-4 semesters.

In your semesters that you are trying to transfer (you need an IUT intra university transfer which you fill out at the admissions building) take the pre reqs and gen eds.

the gen eds are the same in SOM, except you only need 2 composition classes and no writing classes

I think I made a mistake. I took cal 2 last semester and i got a c+ which drags me gpa down to 3.5. I tried to take micro and macro together this semester, but i couldn’t get into micro. As a result, i take CS105 instead and this class is pretty hard. i guess i am totally ****ed .

How good is the MBA at binghamton? I am transferring as an economics major this fall and my goal is to work in a management consulting firm. Should I do the Harpur Fast-Track MBA program? Or try to get work experience after my four years and then apply to a top MBA program? Thanks in advance!

I also want to try for the fast track MBA program but I’m transferring into Binghamton with about a 3.2 GPA and my grades in those core classes are about a 3.0. Will I still be able to do the fast track MBA?
