Harpur vs. CPCA; Chances

I recieved an email from the College of Public and Community Affairs at Binghamton about perhaps wanting to decide to apply to that college.

I go to a high school ranked #22 in the country.
128 out of 230 students in my grade applied to binghamton this year.
My school 'says' they do not rank but its easily noted where someone falls in a class of less than 300...

Stats are as follows:
SAT I : Math: 690 Critical Reading: 600 Writing:620
SAT II for Math 770

My gpa is a 3.7
I have only ever taken Honors and College level classes (aside from gym)
I have above average high school credits if that matters

4 years of English (1 year of creative writing-college level course)
4 years of History (Global, US, Government, Economics)
3 years of Science (Biology, Chemistry, Physics)
equivalent of 6 years of Math (Math A, Math B, Pre Calc, College Calculus)
3 years of Language (Russian)
4 years of Gym/Health(not honors)
1.5 years of Electronics (a mix of mathematics, engineering and acomputer science class)
1 year of Drafting (technical crawing)
1 year of AutoCAD
1 year of Computer Science (w/ C++)
.5 years of FILM (HISTORY film class)
.5 year of SIM(Engineering class)
.5 year of Computer Applications
.5 year of Performing arts (not honors)
.5 year of CISCO networking class
1 term of Business (College level class)

(I THINK THATS IT, LOL)

--NY State Regents Grades--
Math A: 94
Math B: 80
Biology: 92
Chemistry:82
Physics:94
Russian: 91
English: 99
Global Hist: 93
US Hist: 89

EXTRAS:

--Sports--
1 year Varsity Swim Team
1 year Varsity Track Team
2 years Varsity Wrestling Manager
2 years Varsity Tennis Team

Ive been in lots of Clubs. Only ones I feel worth notingar JSA(Junior Statesmen of America)(3YRS) Art (3 yrs) Italian American Club(3 yrs)
Other clubs were only for the year or so, no so long a committment.

Binghamton is my first choice. Most kids in my school apply as a saftely. This year with so many students applying I am afraid I wont make it considering my gps is lower than alot who apply.

Will applying to College of Public and Community Affairs greater my chances of making it into Harpur College?

I have received once decison back so far. From New Jersey Institute of Technology and received a full four year scholarship. I am confused about what binghamton will do for me

it may be a little easier to get into ccpa. admission to harpur is likely to be quite competitive this year. but the only undergrad major offered in ccpa is human development. College of Community and Public Affairs - Human Development : Prospective Students

if you are not interested in the program offered by ccpa, and would only apply in the hopes of transferring later to harpur you should understand that to transfer from one school to another involves applying for an intra-university transfer. i do not know how easy it is to transfer between the two. during freshman year you wouldn't really start taking the human development courses -- you'd focus on your gen eds.

but i would encourage you to really think about whether you'd want to be in ccpa before you decide to apply there.

Hmm ... all the undecided students are put into Harpur, so it might be competitive, but there are definitely more seats available in Harpur ... a lot of people received deferred admissions for Harpur last semester (denied Fall but accepted for Spring), so just think about it. HDEV is the only program in CPCA I think, but you could always apply and transfer out and into another school within Binghamton University.

I go to a crappy school in New Jersey
GPA: 3.3/5
(My school is weird with GPA system)
SAT: 1850
Math: 690
CR: 560
Writing 600

US History SATII: 480
(LMAO.. dont ask)

I got into Harpur for Biological Sciences.

Don't worry, you should be able to get in.

I've just talked to the admission office and they said think more about switching into ccpa program, because it only offers HD program. ALSO, she said chance of getting into Binghamton is same for every majors and warned me not to switch it just because you think it will increase your chance of getting in, but I heard that thebuisiness major is harder than other majors, so it is not true. Does anybody have an answer for this?

I don't want to diminish your accomplishments, however you are OOS. very few, if any, instate students get into Binghamton with a 3.3GPA and 1250SAT's(math and reading)

I thought it was the other way around? Instate people have high chances of getting in instate schools rather then OOS.

I got the same email about CPCA but I told them I wasnt interested. I want to major in english with concentration on writing. I wonder if they just sent that email to a lot of people who appllied or maybe they just sent it to people with community service in their extracurricular. I volunteered as a tutor in public schools for four years so I figured that is why they sent it to me.

No, Binghamton wants to increase their OOS rep. How do they do this? Accept a lot of OOS kids hoping that they will then tell all their friends back home about what a great school it is which will result in a higher OOS yield over the next 5-10 years.
