Hartt Jurys?

Can someone explain what is required for MT students to get junior status? From the website, it sounded like there are some hurdles to cross in order to continue in the program after sophomore year (i.e. “cut program”).

Hi there @Travelor - The Jury system is just for evaluation, not at all a “cut” program. My D is currently a sophomore and you have Juries each semester except your very first one as a Freshman (you do your first one Spring semester of Freshman year). The way it works is that a panel of faculty members hear you present 2 song selections that are based on specific repertoire (one semester is Golden Age, one is Sondheim, etc) and they give you specific feedback about how they see you growing, what you are doing well, and what you could improve on. They do counsel students if they feel they are not making adequate progress, but there is no “cut”. I suppose if your grades were not adequate, then you would not be allowed to continue, but that is pretty much every program’s policy. My daughter is absolutely in love with Hartt and has felt the training is terrific. She has had many wonderful opportunities so far and we can’t say enough about the program.

Thank you so much for clarifying that. We will visit Hartt this weekend and are really looking forward to it.

So nice to hear that your daughter loves the program. My daughter just committed for class of 2021! We’re all very happy.

@Costumegirl3 congratulations to your daughter! My daughter is finishing her freshman year, and couldn’t be happier with her choice if her life depended on it. Hartt is the perfect fit for her, and we’re all thrilled with her training, experiences, living arrangements – all of it! I hope you feel the same way in a year!

@Costumegirl3 thought you’d like a follow-up. My daughter completed her first Hartt jury last week – and it was very positive. Constructive feedback, supportive environment. I talked to several of her friends when we were moving her out of the dorm, and they all felt the same way!
