My D has been accepted into The Hartt School MT program, as well as UArts for Acting. When she auditioned she was really hoping for a musical theater slot. Now though, she is comparing UArts's great location and strong acting program (with a chance to minor in MT) vs. The Hartt School's prestigious music program and university. I have already made contact with many of UArts posters, but none from The Hartt School. Any suggestions as to the quality of the acting program at The Hartt School and overall comments about the school are truly appreciated.

The Hartt school has a wonderful acting program. It's fairly new though, seeing as how the Theatre division of the Hartt School just opened in 1993.

It's a young program but certainly has produced enough alumni than many other older programs in the US

When I applied for colleges, I was choosing between Hartt and UArts, both for MT. My parents loved the idea of Hartt for me and liked the campus and the idea that it was a college experience similar to the ones they'd had.

However, I fell in love with UArts and was disenchanted with the Hartford campus. This is not to say that it doesn't have plenty of things to offer that UArts doesn't have, but being in Philadelphia excited me in a way that a bunch of green grass spread over an entire city never did.

Has your daughter visited both campuses?

Our acting program is a wonderful, Meisner-based training program and it encompasses many other styles and techniques to build a well-rounded actor. But if her heart lies with being a musical theater major, I might tell her to take Hartt. As much as I think our program is wonderful and beneficial to all actors-to-be, I wouldn't satisfy the itch of being a musical theater performer if I were concentrating on the minor versus being a musical theater major.
