Hartt School of Music or Ithaca College School of Music

My son was accepted (Early Action) into The Hartt School of Music for Music Production with a concentration in Jazz Studies. He will audition at Ithaca in 10 days so we don't know the outcome of his acceptance yet. At Ithaca he would study Sound Recording Technology with a concentration in Classical Music. Both schools have very strong Music Production/SRT but they differ in that at Ithaca you must study the classical track and it may be more selective as they have fewer spots to fill. My son's passion is jazz however and he would be very willing to study classical as he does have a respect for that genre. Can anyone give insight into how these schools differ in the above-mentioned program ? We have spent time at both schools and will be at Ithaca for a complete day next week.

Congratulations to you and your son! You might want to post this same message on the music major forum for some insight from one of the Dads. We had a question at Hartt since my son is going for music ed/performance but also loves jazz. Hartt said it could be worked out since Jazz and performance have different budgets but they want all their music students to be able try different genres. I think you should definitely bring it up at the Ithaca audition. Good luck.

Thanks ! I did post the same message on Ithaca’s and the Music School forum but so far heard only from you. Thank you for replying, I appreciate your thoughts. Ithaca is set and firm about the SRT major and Classical concentration. It’s okay… we will see what works out. I was curious about feedback about each music school for Recording Technology/Sound Recording Production.

You might want to check out SUNY Fredonia as a lower cost safety. A friend’s son is a senior there in Sound recording. They do have a jazz minor available to all music students.
They still have audition dates available in late Feb. (Also, College of St Rose in Albany has a brand new recording studio and arts center. They also have a great scholarship program for academics and talent and a jazz minor available.) Enjoy the time with your son.

He actually has an audition set up at SUNY Purchase in February. The only difference here is that the Recording and Jazz are studied independent of each other, whereas, at Ithaca and Hartt they are components of each other and are studied within the same program. We will investigate all options though.

Hi,

Can someone tell me what kind of reputation does The Hartt School Of Music has?
I am an international student, applying in a few months. I have been taught the classical path (BM piano performance), but recently, decided to go for BA (piano). Is Hartt a good choice to do that? How is the BM program in Harrt?

Thank you
