I know this is last minute but I am making my college decision between three schools, all with different programs:

The Hartt School - BFA in Music Theatre

University of Arizona - BFA in Acting

Indiana University Bloomington - double majoring in BA in Theatre/Drama and BA in Telecommunications. I would minor in dance as well and be able to work for my Theatre Education teaching certificate.

I am looking for a total college experience and was just wondering if anybody had opinions on these programs and the schools as a whole. Thanks!

I’m not sure how much of the total college experience you’d get from Hartt. I think their program would be the strongest off all those you mention. The issue with the IU program is that you are a BA in a program with BFAs and MFAs; your odds of being cast in good roles are lessened. On the other hand IU offers a wonderful total college experience and if your goals are theater education more than performance, IU is a great choice in many, many ways. Arizona perhaps is the compromise, a mixture of BFA and college experience. Tradeoffs rather than a solution.

I have done some research on IU but only online…Indiana has a rep of casting from their BA pool. It is a big active department that does a lot of shows and my understanding is there is a real integration of the BA’s into classes with the BFA MTs. There is a bit of competition with the MFAs, but unless you would normally cast older than your age, they would be taking parts that wouldn’t be your type anyway. There is no BFA Acting there. You can click on the productions and look at the cast list to see who was cast in their productions.

Did you visit Hartt? It is a small school. Their program has a lot going for it, but as far as total college experience goes, it didn’t give us that feeling of school spirit that you would get at IU or Arizona.

The thing is, what do you want to study?? That’s what I would focus on first. That is the soul searching that should be going on here more than the specific school.

Y’all, the original post was from April 2011! Definitely would be interesting to know how it turned out.

And as long as we’re debating, not everybody finds the right kind of “school spirit” at a huge state university–and there is plenty of genuine spirit at small colleges! just my 2 cents.

There is a discussion thread elsewhere on Ohio Northern. Go to big list at top of this forum and click on their name. I’ve heard nothing but great things about Ohio Northern—small community, but sounds like an up and coming program.

I am a Sophomore Musical Theatre student at Hartt! You can PM if you like if you have any questions or I can just answer them directly on here! :)
