P.S. Ontolome, (this is from a fellow artist) I really dig your art. How much of it are you sending as suppl. material? What's the limit?

wow, you're really going to apply as an artist too? :) great to meet another person in the same boat. there was a girl a year ahead of us, kebree, who got into harvard this year....she made really amazing paintings. lemme see if i can find her link, if you haven't already seen her stuff. it's absolutely intimidating
http://artattack.to/display.php?artist=1000001376
Do you have any art online, i'd love to see some. I don't know how much i'll send as supplemental art :/ i'm going to try to make some this summer (i haven't made anything all year) and then have slides made, and i guess i'll ask then how much they will accept. i don't think i'll send in a traditional art school portfolio thing either, complete with quick sketches and exercises and figure drawings and such, only the best finished work i have.

Oh my goodness. That girl is really talented. It really is intimidating. And she's pretty. sob Yeah, I've got some art, but it's not online. I've got a couple of pics downloaded on my computer.... If you want, you can PM me your email add and I'll email a couple of pics. :)

yea, makes me feel totally inadequate...laughs. i've never learned to paint, and i'm sure it's hard as hell. not easy like a neat little pencil. and some of those are watercolor....which is baffling.

I noticed some people on this thread mentioned Girls State....

I went to Boys State this year and just got back two days ago, but there I was selected as one of my state's two delegates to Boys Nation, which I will attend at the end of July. Do you think this would be a great help on a Harvard application? (96 boys attend nationwide and all are selected from their respective Boys States)

How did you manage to get into Boys Nation?

First of all, it depends on which state you're from. Boys State in some states conducts a vote of all state delegates to select the two Boys Nation attendees. Other states automatically send the elected Gov and Lt Gov from Boys State. The Girls State in my state holds a vote for Girls Nation.

My Boys State, however, does it differently. Outstanding delegates were nominated by their counselors. Nominees filled out an application asking about awards, honors, jobs, and activities at home, along with offices, honors, and leadership at Boys State. Then each of the nominees were interviewed by a committee of American Legion members (we were asked about relevant current political issues). This committee then selected the two delegates to Boys Nation from our state.

u should definitely put that on your app

Hey everyone! I'm guessing there's quite a number of us prospective Harvard 2010-ers on CC now, so I think we should (apart from posting our stats, etc.) get to know each other a bit better. After all, we're gonna be going thru this together.... for the next 6+ months. And..... who knows.... we might even get to hang out in Cambridge some day. :)

Anyway, I'll start. I'm really into math and psychology. I think I'd like to do a double major in those two... I'm not sure yet. Um.... my fav author is Ayn Rand and Atlas Shrugged is the my favorite book. In general, I love reading classics. As for music, I listen to Classic rock :) Mostly Guns n' Roses, Van Halen, The Stones, The Beatles, Motley Crue. Also, I'm a vegetarian (3 years and counting) and I REAAAALLLLY love Conan O'Brien!!!!

Over to you..... :)

I guess is the harvard chances thread. Any ideas on my chances?

OTHER (maybe the most important):

I was accepted to the Telluride Association Summer Program for this summer. They accept about 9% of applicants each year, and it's sometimes seen as the humanities version of RSI. It's for six weeks, completely free, and one of the most prestigious summer programs in the country. Teachers and profs generally like me, so I'll probably be able to get a *****in' recommendation letter from my TASP prof, who's one of the leaders in his field.

Anyway, thanks for the help.

Hyper: yay, Im from Florida too. Did you go to states for MAO?

..bump..

I apply EA to Harvard

If I got accepted... What are rules to get defer for a year and be able to go travelling/working??

audiofile88: Probably with a higher SAT, you would have as good a shot as many. Question: when you list president of NFL, do you mean of a local chapter, or of the national org., or something else. Its important to be clear on your resume, so it doesn't look like your trying to fudge something in order to make it look even better. (my son does debate, and is at NFL tournament as we speak).

buuuuuuuuumppppppppp

Vat is all zis bump? Anyvay, here is my stuff. I'll probably be blown out of the water by all you guys, but I might as well apply:

Finally, my SAT IIs are in so I can ask you good guys for a little advice. In fact I'm feeling rather bad now with these scores, 'cuz my transcript was far from stellar, while the ranks really stink. Okay let's have a look:
SAT I (old form, Jan 22) M800, V750
SAT II (Jun 4) 670 for Lit., 680 for US History and 740 for IIC. I don't mean anything but this 740 was a crash on me.

I'm definitely for Harvard, nothing else, because every other school wants the TOEFL and it's too expensive for me. Now I'm feeling like committing suicide:( Btw, I'm planning to major in English, isn't it another bad thing! But there's another thing to consider: back here in Vietnam I think I'm the only kid mad enough to take the US History thing, and the Lit. is quite rare. Will they give credit for such a "initiative" or will they just take me for a stupid little guy who can't think of anything else he's good at? Still, if I'm going to major in the humanities, does 740 in the IIC matter much? And then I'm majoring in both English and Chinese at HS and will emerge with advanced Chinese after HS. Another disadvantage cuz I can't take the SAT II Chinese test.

Back to ECs, I have to warn you the EC kids over here can take part in sounds quite bizarre. See:
- Organizer of a "big" commercial variety show for teenagers. That means an outdoor nightshow with lots of live music, break dance (don't laugh!) and that sort of entertainment. It quite shook the city's teens. The profit was quite enormous by any standard. Part of it went to charity funds. I took charge of soliciting sponsors. Well, it's easy once you're immune to blushing;)
- Admin of an English-speaking forum. I think it's the biggest one in Vietnam.
- Round-2 candidate for the Cathay Pacific Wilderness Experience contest. It's like a competition about environment conservation for kids my age where they pick two of us to take to South Africa (yikes!) for a week or so. I came out top 30 in the country.
- Taking piano lessons for three years, but I don't think I can make a nice record.
Recomm. outta be okay. St like "top few in my career" by at least one of the two teachers, plus a letter from my mom;)
Special awards: Second prize in the official advanced English contest for highschoolers in my city. I got the same prize twice, once in tenth grade, another in eleventh grade. Prudential scholarship for Student of the Year in tenth grade, school's scholarship for top 5% kids in each class (very small class, 27 or so:). Is it an anticlimax? Potential candidate for the national advanced English contest too. Will think of other things later;)

You're in as far as I'm concerned. As long as your SAT 2 scores are in the 700s or even 600s, I don't think Harvard cares, especially if it's in a subject you're not considering as a major. They just want a reflection of how good the courses at your school are so as to compare your grades with others. Being from Vietnam and having done what you have, I think you will be accepted (although it's always a long shot with Harvard.)

ah, might as well post the stats. Im not sure if I want to apply EA or RD, I know my only chance (and little at that!) is on EA, but I would apply no matter what my scores just to say i did it.

SAT -- 720/720/710 m/v/w (2150) (Im gonna take 'em again in

gusgooz1, you've regained my spirit! :) Thanks a bunch pal;) I'm not being sentimental or st, but all this day since 6 PM (when CB released my SAT II scores) I've been cursing myself for being stupid on the worst day possible (that means Jun 4:(). Yeah, you guys say scores aren't all you have to count on, but they are when your transcripts suck. Problem is, back here whenever people choose to apply to Ivies at all they'll start working at a pace that you look at and feel ashamed at yourself. And then look at all these loooooooong EC lists. How did you pull all that together?
