Harvard 2020 Waitlist Discussion

^^ I seriously doubt an additional recommendation will make a difference, but your squad leader can send the letter to Harvard Admissions via the post office or fax the letter.

I know itā€™s hard to wait, but honestly, unless you just won a national or international award or something, there is little you can do to improve your chances. The kind of desperation some may be feeling is not good for the soul, even for a few weeks  Focus on the schools that admitted you and let Harvard go. If a surprise happens, and the chance is minimal, let it take you by surprise. Otherwise, I am sure you all have some great options for college.

@gibby I have been doing research and am the second author on a paper that was just accepted for publishing. would this be worthy of sending or still not matter much?

^^ It all depends on the quality of the publication. If itā€™s an international publication ā€“ something that is world renown, and googleable ā€“ of course it would make a difference! If thatā€™s the case, then you should let Harvard Admissions know about it. How much it might effect the outcome of your waitlist status is anyoneā€™s guess.

So it would be preferable to directly mail the Bartlett office, not just email your regional rep?

Waitlisted

I didnā€™t get a confirmation email, should I call the Admissions office?

Did anyone post thoughts yet on timing to send a short letter of interest?

I just wrote this as a private message to a student, but thought I should repost here for those waitlisted students that donā€™t understand how the waitlist system works.

@gibby Iā€™m from California and am visiting NYU some time in April. Do you think it is worth it to visit Harvard and talk to an AO. If so, should I call beforehand and should I bring any letters or recommendation or a paper print-out of my LOCI?

@moneymaker300 I too would also like to know this. I will, coincidentally, be visiting Boston and want to know if this is something I should do while there. I donā€™t want to come off as pushy at all. I would like to see Harvard again, and if there is something I can do while there that could benefit me then I would love to go. Although, Iā€™m sure there really isnā€™t much that can be done. If there was Iā€™m sure thereā€™d be hordes of waitlisted families flying there.

I would call Admissions and speak with an AO to see if that is something they would be amenable to. My gut tells me they will say no, but who knows, maybe it will be your lucky day!

@gibby I made this account so I could get your opinion on my LOCI, as I was waitlisted at Harvard as well. I recently interviewed for a summer internship at a very large, well known company. However this occurred in March, so I intended to notify Harvard of my trip, what I learned from the brilliant minds I encountered, and how it affected me. My letter was fairly concise, only two paragraphs. What do you think?

@gibby hi Gibby! Thanks for all of the advice! I have a question about additional letters of recommendation - would getting a letter from a Harvard law graduate be something that could benefit the waitlist decision? I want to go into govt and politics and law as well. Thanks!

As you havenā€™t been employed as an intern yet, no.

No ā€“ unless the graduate taught you in an academic class, or you did research under this person, or were employed by this person. Otherwise, what could they possibly say about you? ā€œIā€™ve known @supervivencia ever since he was a kid and you should admit him/her.ā€

Has anyone here gotten into other Ivies?

I was just wondering if a wait list at Harvard speaks any merit. It was the only super competitive school I applied to besides Stanford (rejected at Stanford), and I feel that if I was able to get wait listed here I might have gotten into a less selective Ivy had I applied.

@Jaga98 Future Yalie here, but accepted a spot on Harvardā€™s waitlist because I would totally go to Harvard over Yale. Who knows about getting in to other ivys, but if Harvard saw something in you, then chances are some other competitive schools probably wouldā€™ve, too

Hi everyone! Is it better to email a letter of continued interest to the admissions counselor? Or is it better just to use the waitlist materials upload link? If so, would it be better to send a letter or just awards weā€™ve won since January? Also, when should one send the letter? Thanks!

Hello, I was wondering if you could message me? I have a couple questions and I would greatly appreciate your help. Thanks!

@gibby Thanks! Would I ask for the additional letter of recommendation to be sent to the admissions officer for my region or is there another way to send in letters of recommendation?
