Harvard Admissions Officers are on Crack!!!

the truth is, we'll never know; its impossible to try to piece together why or why not certain applications were or were not accepted by colleges...IMO you just gotta do ur best on the app, and pray, get on the floor and pray, lol

wait is his sats out of 2400? cuz thats what im thinkin... if its out of 1600 then its really good

it is out of 1600

I was just gonna say the same thing except you beat me to it... I agree 100% with newyork

I take back what i said before..... i thought he got a 1400 out 2400... im thinking about my year sats... he is a scholar athlete and he does deserve it... what new york said is true.... they thought he wont be devoted to academics because he has to devote all his time to being a olympic athlete

I have no idea why Harvard did not accept him. His SAT score is pretty high and OLYMPIC GOLD MEDALIST! I mean every person has something different to offer to the college, and this person does have something special. he should have beeen accepted, in my opinion.

Based on his SATs and athletics, he should have easily gotten in. But I still hope I get in over him...

Many of you think you have to be some sort of "God" to attend Harvard (BestMiler1)...I assure you this is not the case...

BestMiler1 sorry didnt see your new post

" just read from Yahoo Sports that Harvard rejected Joey Cheek. The olympic gold medalist for some skiing event. Now normally I would say, good for harvard, you're not just accepting him cuz he's an athlete, but this joey guy seems really awesome. He's donating all of the bonus of $25,000 he recieves from the US olympic committee for recieving gold to an organization that helps children in war-torn areas. Now that is an amazing spirit, and he truly deserves to go to harvard. If he couldn't get in, there is not hope for any of us.
P.S. Joey got a perfect score in reading, and scored just north of 1400 (not bad for an athlete)"

We have no idea why he was rejected. Maybe he didn't complete his application. Maybe he thought he was a shoo-in and arrogantly blew off his essays or interview. Maybe he had something in his school record like a disciplinary problem that caused the admissions officers to doubt his character. Maybe his grades were terrible even though he's clearly a bright person. Another possibility is that he had great grades, but took such easy courses that it didn't seem he had the intellectual passion to be happy in Harvard's rigorous academic environment.

Harvard adcoms aren't stupid and don't look for reasons to reject applicants who are Olympic athletes. I also doubt that Havard rejected him for fear the Olympics would take time from his studies. He always could have taken a year off from Harvard to devote to the Olympics.

So... Harvard should admit anyone who every does anything amazing? People do amazing things all the time, but they can only admit so many people. And this dude wasn't one of them.

vanilea, if they google this post, your chances for Harvard will prolly disappear faster than the time taken in dowlhill slalom

His GPA may be 0.1... who knows

Any idiot can score in SAT. It reflects nothing, especially the math. If he passed 6th grade, he can score 700+/800

vanilea, I count enough people on CC, forget the world who are accepted to harvard each year. Joey wasnt facing like the Final frontier that 'no mortal' can conquer

He may have written his essays in 'All your base' english and that would warrant his arrest more than a rejection (kiddin')
If u dont know 'All your base' watch this video:

I took a close look at the stories that mentioned Cheek's being rejected by Harvard, and I'm wondering whether the reporters got the story wrong. I suspect that he may have been deferred, not rejected.

First, very few students are rejected by Harvard EA. Most of the applicants are deferred.

Second, given the fact that he was preparing for the Olympics and got a perfect verbal score (at least that is what he is quoted as saying he got), there doesn't seem to be anything so egregious in his application that would make him a candidate for early rejection.

Third: Here's what the USAToday.com story said, "
He applied for early entrance to Harvard but was turned down."

Harvard doesn't have "early entrance." It has "early action." If the media go tthat wrong, they also could have mistaken "deferred" for "rejected."

If, however, he was indeed rejected, perhaps this quote from the USAToday.com story indicates the reason:
" “I'm excited to get back into scholastics and see what I can do,” Cheek says. “I didn't work hard enough (in high school), so now I get a second chance.”'

Meanwhile, Olympian Sarah Hughes was accepted EA to Harvard -- at least according to the media. There's at least one Harvard student in the Olympics -- a member of the women's hockey team.

Meanwhile, 6 members of the Olympic women's hockey team are current Harvard students or alums. This includes Angela Ruggiero, who's in her third Olympic appearance. http://gocrimson.collegesports.com/sports/w-hockey/spec-rel/021106aad.html

very good northstarmom.... you brought the question home

We don't accept or deny students based on one thing. All the info sessions you people have been to didn't make realize this?

It's about the big picture.

SAT = four hour exam with no historical data on the new section. We'd be idiots if we sent out letters based simply on the SAT score.

P.S. Once again, the word is DENY, not REJECT. You are denied admission, not rejected as a person.

P.P.S. Where did the term "adcom" come from? We don't use it within admission circles...is this guidance counselor slang?

Maybe harvard was not overly impressed with what he has been doing over the past 8 years since high school (you must admit he has had a really long gap year).

you are a admission officer with the name sugaree?... thats kind a shocking because i thought you guys would have more proper and not young adult generation term... your name is making it seem you might not be legit... come on "sugaree67"?... And not most educated and well mannered people would not use the term idiot in a student forum especially not a harvard admission person.... and you say the word info, if you are admission officer you abbreviate information into info like teenagers do and definitely know the term adcom

I know a swimmer got in Harvard with exactly 1400 and 3.7ish GPA. He's good, but not Olympic calibe swimmer. He's doing great by the way.

one major thing you guys are forgetting is that he applied at age 26.. nontraditional freshman applicant several years removed from high school education. but still, im sure he'll get into one or more of yale, duke, columbia, and the other schools he is applying to. i hope he gets into yale, seems liek a really cool guy.

" nontraditional freshman applicant several years removed from high school education."

This actually could have been a plus for diversity reasons, but I'm sure that Harvard would have wanted evidence that he had been doing some intellectual activities during the time since he had graduated from high school.

[quote]
Harvard in every way things that they accept people out of more than just an SAT score, which I think they should. Rivers Cuomo didn't even send an SAT score, and he got accepted. i doubt it that he was accepted for his intellectual superiority over others. A perfect score in reading is harder to get than a perfect in math.

i heard rivers was going back to harvard. that alone made me want to apply (almost). he's absolutely my favorite musician EVER!

anyhoo, as for the topic--yeah, it does sound a little weird that they rejected joey cheek. though hopefulforcornell has a good point--26? whoa, i thought he was younger. but that could definitely be a reason. or maybe his essays sucked. or perhaps the teacher he went back to for a rec after 8 years had forgotten him.

who knows? but it is a bit discouraging to all the average applicants out there.
