Harvard admitted students-could you please read?

Harvard admittees,
Congratulations on your acceptance! I am an incoming high school freshman, and my for sure pick is Harvard University.I was just wondering if you could give me some tips on what to do to get into Harvard, and if you can, could you just post your high school classes from freshman to senior? Thanks, all your help is really appreaciated

There is no magic formula, specific set of classes, or type of essay to write to get in. While you are preparing for college, remember to take little breaks so you don’t burn out. I guess the biggest piece of advice I could give is show the admissions staff that you have exhausted all of your available resources in your community. They also want students with a personality–no college wants students with just numbers. Every student has a story–share that story, find yourself while in high school. Also, show passion for whatever you do…for instance, if you like social studies, you might be involved in ECs that reflect that classroom interest.

This site has some great information on applying…just click around to find what you are looking for. Also, don’t forget about other options! A student who strives and is willing to work as hard as you do will have doors opened at several colleges!

Good luck and enjoy high school!

My son just got into Harvard and I’d be glad to give you a bit of input . . .

The best thing you can do if you are a high school freshman and want to get into Harvard is forget about getting into Harvard and focus on high school. Not just work in high school, but becoming a person in high school. Try to find what genuinely motivates you as opposed to just what you do to please others or just jump through a hoop. Find your passion. Grow socially as well as academically. Stretch yourself and try new things. Then, when you are late in your junior year or early in your senior year, you will be in a position to take a look at yourself and know what the best next step for you in your life is. Maybe it will be Harvard, maybe not. In any case, I can assure you that Harvard does not want someone who just punches the numbers thinking that’s the road to success. They want someone with genuine passion and drive. There’s nothing unusual about that. This is what all of the schools are looking for. So find your passion and pursue it. The college piece will fall into place on its own.

Why do you think Harvard is for you? What do you know about Harvard that makes you think it is for you other than a number 1 ranking?

I too am an aspiring student …I think Harvard is the perfect university form because I want to make an impact on the world!!! I want to change the world for the better…especially regaurding the environment of the present world…I am trying to get a membership in the world wide fund for nature…I want people enjoy their lives as much a person should but also taking Care of the others…I want to get exposed to the people from all walks of live…I have taken up business…as that is the only way I feel u can make an impact in the world

shreepriya-me too! I really want research and find cures for some of the major diseases that are threatening the lives of millions around the planet. I want to find a way for them to live a normal life, for them and their loved ones not having to worry about their life-threatening disease. I believe that Harvard is right for me because I not only want to make an impact on the world, but Harvard also introduces me to a very diverse, intellectual, community that will help me in the future.

Everybody-you all have really great advice! Can you just tell me a little more about the classes you took, your ec’s, and maybe even your scores so I can have an idea about the type of students that attend Harvard? Thanks, all your input is really appreciated.

If you would like to see the classes, scores, and EC’s of admitted students, refer to the SCEA: Decisions thread: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/harvard-university/1253171-official-harvard-university-2016-early-action-decisions-thread.html

The whole point of our replies is to tell you that there is no particular class or club that will guarantee you a spot at Harvard. You may have the scores, the ECs, and everything else…but don’t forget about your personality. Be specific–you guys have general ideas of what you want to do…cure disease and help the world. That’s what every beauty queen says in the final round. This is different. While you are preparing for Harvard (or any other top school…) take time to find and develop your passions! Good luck and ENJOY HIGH SCHOOL…you only have that experience once!

Also, I hope you both like Harvard for reasons other than the fact that is consistently ranked #1…there are other reasons why we are choosing Harvard.

Quillabee93 : ya u agree one of the main reason is that Harvard is no. 1 no matter in what and when…it is always at the top…and about my goal I am sure I will work on that!!! Any other advice ??? Something which u would like to share??
Chadradeep: sorry if the spelling is wrong…even I am really like you I can’t see suffer but not in the health sector…I am not a bio student…but in terms of making some massive changes in the way we treat the environment and invent a technology which makes cars run on carbon dioxide!!! Just an idea !!! Need to work as quillabee93 said!!

When will be the Admitted Student Days on April 2012 for Harvard College?

Visitas is April 21-23.

I was just accepted to the class of 2016. The advice that @midatl_dd gave is awesome, and really all that you can do. What Harvard wants is someone who puts passion into the things they do. They want someone who takes advantages of the opportunities that they have. As for classes, just challenge yourself as much as possible; there is no set formula for which classes will get you accepted. As a freshman, you should focus on what will make you the best version of yourself possible, not what you think a “Harvard student” is.
Furthermore, don’t go to Harvard just because it is the #1 school, find a real, personal reason why you would be good for Harvard and why Harvard would be good for you.

Final piece of advice: Find out who you are in high school; that isn’t something that will happen if you try to mold yourself into a “Harvard student.”

:)

@shreepriya
Careful - Harvard is actually not #1 in everything.

^Look at Yale Law School for example. X)

As for the OPs question on high school courses. That all depends on your interests. If you are a science lover, then it just makes sense that you will take as many challenging science courses as is possible. Otherwise challenge yourself with Honors, AP, and especially, as In my case, IB classes. Don’t focus too much on getting into one college, cause if your whole goal in life is to get into Harvard then you are limiting yourself greatly. That’s good that you are interested in bettering your world, find a way to do that now in High school.
