HARVARD admitted the fewest early applicants since 1994 this year

Apparently saving room for what it expects to be a large number of RD applicants.

Despite that, is it still worth applying early, Byerly?

The statistics say it is, although they seem to be making an effort to adjust the equation.

mmm. I think its a good thing they're doing that. After all- reducing early intake does give them more slots to play with in the regular decision cycle ... not to mention the huge yield rate Harvard enjoys so they're not too concerned about losing out to other schools.

Do you think byerly, that in the future- Harvards early pool will continue to drop and the regular pool continue to swell? Its interesting because thats the sort of article that makes apply EA/ED less appealing so some might be tempted to apply elsewhere early ...

maybe that is the point of the decline. Perhaps Harvard is trying to eliminate or reduce the number of "strategic" applicants as opposed to those applying early for the reasons EA was originally established. Just a sugggestion.

Thats what I think as well.

Something like that, perhaps. As noted, it is easier for Harvard to reverse the obcene emphasis on early admission than for other elites, because its RD yield is still higher than any other school's overall yield.

But they can't afford to eliminate it entirely, or too many applicants they'd like to have would be tied up in legal knots by binding ED schools and be prevented from applying.

Personally, I'd like to see Harvard announce, at some point, that they would henceforth refuse to honor any and all claims of "exclusive negotiating rights" - and allow anyone to apply regardless of the claims by another school that an applicant is its personal "property".

Indeed, Harvard came closer to taking this position 3 years ago than many people are now aware.

Byerly, do you think the rate will be lower next year EA?

haha, let the turf wars commence. Put Harvard Law school to some use!

Its too early, perhaps, to say what will happen next year, as the situation is fluid, and all schools - including Harvard - can be counted upon to act in accordance with what they perceive to be their best interest.

I hope so... I am Mexican American, fluent in Spanish, and I got deferred from Yale... it's a bummer. (Also funny because people say AA works, even though I had a 1500 m/v SAT)

Not worried, though. Harvard has been the absolute most helpful college with their multicultural recruitment program.

Good for Harvard.

AA works doesn't mean that being a Mexican-American with a 1500 SAT makes you a shoe-in at Yale.

From all the hype, you would think so.

(I just didn't have a 1500, I had a ton of other stuff ;))

I'm with Guitar.

AA does not get you in. Don't be bitter about not being accepted into such a pretigious university even though you are a minority.

Yeah, that's an especially...worrisome attitude because it's not like being a URM is an achievement. OK, accomplishing all that while being dirt poor and overcoming adversity is, but just being Mexican and getting a 1500 doesn't make you any better than a white guy who got a 1500. Plenty of people with 1600 SATs and "a ton of other stuff ;)" get deferred/rejected from Yale regularly. Your sense of entitlement isn't very becoming.

Just make sure that doesn't come across on your apps. Put as much effort into them--your resume and URM status won't make you a shoe-in at any school (very few things, such as being Michael Viscardi, will) so don't just slack off assuming you'll get into X University!!

Harvard had less early applicants this year. They probably accepted less people early because they didn't want their acceptance rate to be too high.

Maybe they accepted fewer people because of a general lack of grammar proficiency. ;)

Now that I typed that I'm bound to have some type of major grammar or punctuation error in the post.

haha yeah fewer my bad

wow. i deserve that. im usually good with grammar too.

Haha, no, you didn't. I was being a *****. Sorry.
