I'm an 8th grader who has a desire to study at Harvard. I'm currently in the school's "honor program" and I earn all A+'s. I play three instruments, and I play club soccer. My worry concerns community service. I lack the amount of hours I heard I should have been now. I have a total of 16 hours of community service. Does this ruin my chances of entering a universtiy such as Harvard? My ethnicity=asian-american.

Don’t worry about community service. It’s not necessary at all.

Do what you love to do and do well at it.

You’re at a disadvantage being an Asian-American, if that’s what you were wondering with your last sentence.

You’re in 8th grade. College admissions look at high school. You don’t need to worry about it so much, not for a long while.

If you enjoy community service, continue with it. If you enjoy your three instruments, continue with them. If you enjoy soccer, continue playing. If you enjoy getting A+, continue to do so. Excel as is your wont and you’ll very well find yourself a good fit for Harvard and similar schools.

Honestly, dear, please do not worry about all this right now. Work really hard in school, have fun, and then come back to college confidential junior year
