My DD has been invited to a reception by the alum who interviewed her. The reception is located in a major metropolitan area 2 hours away. What is the dress code to this type of event? It is am afternoon type event.
What does the invite say?
It was an informal email invite that does not specify.
Most invitations will say something like the following…
“We are pleased to invite you and (your stunning daughter) to an informal reception on Sunday, the fourth day of Beltane…”
What is the clue in the excerpt above?
Failing that, I would consider that the expected dress is as informal as the email invite was.
@CoMoMom - my daughter and I attended one of these last year - “business casual” would be how I would describe most people’s attire. Some of the accepted students wore jeans and did not look out of place. I don’t think it really matters what you wear - no one will be judging you. The goal of these receptions is to allow nearby students and parents to get to know each other, and for the alumni to convince the kids (and parents) that Harvard is the place for them.
We went to one last year and BldrDad is completely accurate
Thanks so much! Very helpful. My DD is the only student from our small city admitted to Harvard so meeting some other students in advance would be very nice.
How did it go?
It went well. A total of 9 students were invited. 5 came plus parents of 2 came without the student. Most alumni graduated quite awhile ago but two recent grads came and were able to answer specific questions. It was definitely worth the effort to drive there! My DD felt it was very helpful to her decision making process.
