Harvard Alumni Interview

Umm… so I applied to Harvard half-jokingly, and now this woman called me today as the local alumni representative. We’re getting together early next week right after her tennis lesson… eek! What do I wear? I’m basically the eclectic, Birkenstocks-and-jeans-with-some-vintage-stuff-thrown-in type, but I own a string of pearls if I need it.
Oh, and I feel dumb, but who is interviewing whom here? I was hoping this was mostly me asking her about undergraduate life there and the kind of academic experience I could expect as a student. Is she reporting back to the school as well?

The interviewer will report back to the school too. There are threads that discuss possible questions that you should look at. Also spend time on Harvard's website so that you can come up with intelligent questions.

I am a Harvard alumni interviewer. If you aren't really interested in Harvard, believe me, it will show in your interview because you'll arrive unprepared and probably will sit passively, acting as if getting acceptance will be simply a matter of luck.

Meanwhile, the interviewer will be sending a report back to Harvard that the adcoms will take into consideration. While the interview is definitely not the most important factor when it comes to admissions, it is a factor. Approximately 85% of Harvard applicants are qualified for admission. Most applicants are outstanding and would be the type of students that the majority of colleges in the country would love to have. Unfortunately, Harvard does not have room for all of the wonderful students who apply, so things like one's interview can make a difference.

Harvard makes an effort to interview all students who complete their applications. While it's not possible to do this abroad, when it comes to US applicants, virtually all are interviewed.

If all that happens in the inteview is that you ask the alum about her life at Harvard, she will not have much to report back to Harvard, which will be interested in her views about what you have to offer to Harvard -- particularly things about your activities and personality that you were not able to highlight in depth in your application.

If you go to the Harvard board here and check old messages, there is plenty of info about how to best handle Harvard interviews.

Hello, If your interview goes “super” well, then is there a chance of getting into Harvard College ? Thank you. bye
