j07 - please don't think I'm saying anything against those incredibly hard-working kids who attain excellence on their own. I admire them just as much as the next guy (or girl!). But one has to admit that at least a few kids doing Intel level research didn't exactly have to go to the moon and back looking for opportunities at major labs...but once they had those opportunities in their grasp, I must admit that they do wonders with them!

MusicNut - I, too, have the (mis)fortune of living in Texas. Oh well, at least the stars at night are big and bright! (well, they are when we aren't having unseasonal ice storms ;)).

ajkcorner- I agree with you, though, and I wasn't criticizing what you were saying. I know that a lot of kids use family (and occasionaly $$$ connections) to get those types of positions.

I'm from Texas too!!
Haha, no joke about the ice storms. Tomorrow is our first day at school and we're not even going till 11.

People tell me that I have no "focus" and that my interests are pretty scattered. x_X But I like what I do....maybe I wasn't "passionate" enough about one particular thing?

He did Academic Team and Science Olympiad. He was pretty good at the latter. He was the only one in his class to get a state medal all four years. And he, along with some of his freshmen friends, were responsible for getting the team to states for the first time.

However most of his time was spent messing around on the computer. He learned Linux, worked on a Civ 4 mod, did some programming for a med school professor and did quite a bit of freelance work computer programming. I think that since Harvard is planning a major expansion of his engineering offerings this made for more of a hook than we expected. This was his real EC though it ended up falling under a bunch of different categories.
