Harvard Class of 2010 Percent Yield!

true that ^

Which part of it? The stubbornly optimistic or the rumor?

Canaday, I have to say I'm pulling for you more than for anyone else on CC right now. I really, really hope that you get in, and I admire your optimism.

But, you will have a great time at Wesleyan, if that is where you wind up. Learn to love it, and you can have a terrific experience. As it gets harder to get into Ivies, schools like Wesleyan are just getting stronger and stronger. You will find other really bright, quirky people, and be very happy.

Also, if you do well, and Harvard is still your dream, you can always try transferring. Clearly, you were pretty qualfied if they waitlisted you.

I was talking a few hours ago with a prior Director of Admissions (prir to Fitzsimmons), who predicts only "4 or 5" off the waitlist. I still think it will be more than that at the end of the day.

byerly, have you seen what xjayz posted?

he said that there are about 15.

do u think they've all been notified?

Certainly some have been. Yield numbers (and thus WL numbers) won't be finalized for at least another month, however.

I called today and they said some time next week it'll get done.

ICargirl,

Thank you for your kind comments. From your mouth to William Fitzsimmons '67's ears.

So...it's next week, but some have been notified? What? Someone explain to me how that works in terms of timing because I don't get it. Maybe I'm just not smart enough to be a Harvard student...

The waitlist selections are one-by-one choices ... in some ways the most carefully considered applicants of all.

Thanks for the clarification, Byerly.

Byerly, I am currently on the waiting list at H and I've heard that admitting kids off the waiting list all depends on what kind of students did not accept. The Admissions Office wants to somehow balance out the class again?

If this is true, can you maybe give us some hints about what direction the class needs to be balanced? Thanks

Sorry ... can't help you there! They may not even have totally completed an audit on what "holes" need filling.

Byerly,

I've been meaning to ask this for a while. Do the acceptees hear by phone, snail mail, email or some combination? Thanks.

I got word that the first round of WL admits have already been notified.

Yes, but through what means? Byerly already said they have been, but I'd like to know how.

xjayz / Byerly - how many rounds of WL admits are there? And Byerly, does the fact that the Yield numbers will not be finalized for another month mean that it's possible for people to be admitted off the WL one month from now? I thought that last year, everything on the WL was a done deal by May 20th/21st.

In theory, 3 rounds: (1) to fill a shortfall, if any, following the response by matriculants on May 1; (2) those accepted to fill additional vacancies, if any, occurring when matriculants are lured elsewhere as waitlist admits (ie, the "musical chairs" phenomenon); and (3) those filling slots opened up by "summer melt" - assuming the school doesn't decide to stand pat with the then-existing class size.

Interesting info, Byerly. Well, it seems that there was zero shortfall (based on the Crimson article), so that brings H to round 2: based on your oft cited cross-admit data, and the fact that very few of H's competitors are even using the waitlist, I would expect little of the musical chairs phenomenon. And, of course, it's too soon for summer melt. So, with all that, I find it hard to believe that they've already taken 15 from the waitlist, as xjayz reports. (unless the Crimson didn't get the numbers precisely right.)

No shortfall? Au contraire, apparently there were five-six people who didn't come, according to William Fitzsimmons.

As for the second round, Yale, Stanford and MIT are already using the waitlist, if CCers are to be believed, so there could be some interesting musical chairs. Especially with 30 waitlistees from MIT accepted.

What about the "Z list" ?
