I think you have a very compelling story, having to live though those hurricanes. And you are right to have the attitude that you can never get in if you don’t apply. You are clearly more than just a “throw in the towel” applicant, though!
Guys I applied to REA at Harvard. I am not a captain of many group but I did lead my school group to various interscholastic competitions such as mathematical modelling and many more. I am Vice captain for my school cricket team but I think it would hardly matter as Harvard wouldn’t look into a sport that isn’t played in that part of the world. I was ranked in top 1.5% (out of 1400000) students of my country in class 10th national examinations. Due to limitations of resources available I am not able to go to summer schools and all but I try my best with free online courses. I have volunteered for a very small organization for participating in beach cleanup drives that are held annually. I don’t know what can I do more than this to get into my dream school. Do you all know something that I haven’t done and I can do after keeping my financial condition and pandemic in mind?
@ZoZaMo
Thank You! I hope everyone on this thread gets in.
Dude you surely are a be positive guy that every university wants. Keep up with that attitude dude.
If you were talking to me, then it’s Dudette LOL! And thanks.
Hi everyone! I’m just replying to this because I’m applying women’s studies too. I’m definitely not as accomplished as you! I’ve done some social justice oriented work at my school: founder of student leadership council, co-leader of on-campus activism club, raised funding for free menstrual products to be provided on campus (probably my biggest extracurricular/project), led the annual pad/tampon donation drive. I also do creative writing, won some regional awards nothing big, and got into a state arts program. I also did some research with an agricultural history professor. As for stats, not that great but I did take a lot of APs and I did not submit test scores. My personal statement is about the intersection between calculus and storytelling. I challenged myself a lot in math even though it’s not my strength, so I just wanted to show that aspect about myself. My Harvard essay is about how growing up in a tech centric area gave me a different perspective on activism and I kinda analogized that to my relationship with my entrepreneurial dad (sorry its really hard to explain lol). I don’t really think I have any strengths compared to the rest of yall, and I definitely will not get in. But Harvard has always been my dream so I figured I’d shoot my shot. Anyways good luck to us!
just out of curiosity, did anyone upload supplementary materials into their portal?
I uploaded a short story from my AP Lang class junior year that I got an A on. I thought it would be good to upload it because it shows my interest in the field I wish to enter after college (social work).
Hey guys! Those days are super stressful.
I live in Toronto and I didn’t even be contacted for an interview! Doesn’t that mean rejection or deferment? Or just about the alumni availability in my region? Will my chances be hurt during the scea process?
Thanks!
@TWELVEGUO
hi! alumni interviews are based only on availability. alumni does not receive your application, so they don’t indicate if you’re likely to be accepted or rejected. they are assigned a list of applicants in their area. so, they only know your basic information, such as your name and where you attend high school.
so don’t worry, your admissions chances are not hurt if you don’t receive an interview. best of luck.
Hey guys, I have one more question.
I am in a Canadian high school, and we care only about the grade 12 marks. My overall gpa for last three years is pretty low, but my marks are getting better and better every year, like I was all 50s at grade 9 and right now I am all 95+ at grade 12.
Other than climbing gpa, I also had few heavyweight math modeling awards, like himcm. I uploaded few math modeling papers and I think these are really impressive.
My concern is that will Harvard mark me 1 for academics if they think my modeling papers are really impressive and at the same time ignore my previous bad scores?
Note: Didn’t submit SAT, only four AP exams (4444). My school doesn’t offer any college prep courses like AP, IB, etc. I self studied and got four 4s.
What do you think?
Any chance they will release decisions today 12/12?
Omg nooo don’t say that!! Honesty my academics really aren’t strong compared to everyone else applying to Harvard and I’m a bit unsure about my writings too based off what you just wrote though i really don’t think you should be so definitive about a no!!! at the end of the day… we’re all just playing a game i suppose haha. luck of the cards Sending happy thoughts <3 <3
i uploaded an analysis of an short film I did for my IB HL film class, inspired by a female experimental film director who was a huge advocate for more women in the film industry!
I have lived in 3 countries with Nigeria been more than 7 years. I experienced gender discrimination and a lack of So good technological education. I founded a student organization that brings virtual technology education to medical students at a university. I have students from (Canada, U.S, and Nigeria) as a part of the organization. Also, being a part of ASB as a commissioner, I founded health week at my school, interned for a real estate firm, an intern for a congressman in Michigan, went to Mexico to teach students, tutored at the library. By the way, I live in the United States now. Oh, I also went to a boarding school at the age of 9.
Essays: Talk about my organization, and how my parents are divorced, and the struggle of growing up with an extended family in my grandparents’ house = discrimination from my male cousins.
That sounds like a pretty impressive hook to me! You sound like a very strong applicant.
Hi! I am international and did not send test results because of unavailability in my country due to the pandemic. I am totally blind, and I think that if there is anything that can attract attention it is my work with journalism (I currently freelance for international news outlets such as Huffintong Post, The Telegraph, Business Insider etc, and I have interviewed politicians and UN and Human Rights Watch officials, my articles have been highlighted by universities and national newspapers so I think that caught their attention). In addition to that, I also co-founded a non-profit, did a lot of disability activism (conferences and stuff like that), and worked quite a bit with UNICEF on various projects, even being selected to create content for their international platforms. Despite this, I can’t help but feel underqualified. My family is very low income, and I never had access to I don’t know, summer camps, for example, and we also don’t have access to AP or IB in my school (I did my country’s curriculum) I had my interview a couple of weeks ago, and there are no interviewers in my country (it was with an admissions officer, the one who read the applications from my region) I honestly think it doesn’t mean anything but still I am happy that they even minimally considered me. Good luck to all!
Hi! I am applying from the UK, although I am a US citizen, I have lived here since I was young.(I don’t know if that makes me a domestic or international applicant) I didn’t submit my Standardized test score since I never had a chance to take them.( wanted to take it this year but Corona )
I am hoping to study mathematics at college, so most of my ECs were based on that- Olympiad selection camps, and national olympiad results. I also love music and musical theatre and have worked as a company manager in a professional musical production, as well as leader of the school orchestra. I also love football (soccer) and played for my school.
My essays were about my passion of problem solving, and the beauty of devoting one’s life to finding out a mathematical fact, something I believe is the common interest for any intelligent being in this universe. I expressed my goal of solving a particular problem as I want to be a mathematician when I am older.
My supplementary essay was about my experiences in musical theatre and the teamwork and leadership needed to attempt to carry out a musical production during these pandemic times.
I also submitted an attempted solution to an unsolved problem I was working on for some time as an additional paper.
I just found this thread today, and just reading over some of what you guys have written I am being inspired to work hard and do my best in life regardless of if I get in or not! I hope the best for all of us!
Do u guys think decisions might come out tonight
