international student- got deferred. what does that mean? how can i improve my chances for rd?

should i include my final year transcript- i got 95.7%
i already submitted 4 letters of recc
does being deferred by harvard show a better potential for acceptance at ivies like columbia?

Admitted. Top 5% in a good suburban high school, mostly A minuses with some A’s and a rare B in almost all honors/AP classes, ACT 36 overall, with 36 in everything except 34 in math, presumably good recommendations from both academic teachers and high-level music teachers. What stood out was a very big music hook, with first place in two international music competitions (pre-pandemic), sustained participation throughout high school in absolute top level youth ensembles/programs in both classical and jazz, while continuing participation in school’s own award-winning music program. No way of knowing, but I think that kid might have been viewed as a recruited musician, if there were such a thing.

Don’t know, but if they’d considered you unqualified, they would have rejected you. So I think that you do have a chance at other Ivies, too. Be aware that nowadays all the Ivies are extremely competitive. It’s not like it was 40 years ago, when if you didn’t get into Harvard/Yale/Princeton, you still had a shot at the others. They all seem to accept less than 5% of applicants these days.

I was referring to REA. In REA they only admit, defer, and deny. I was merely answering your question.

In REA they only admit, defer, and deny. This is true. The question was asked, so I answered it.

Fam i got deferred. I am an international student. I feel like ppl who didnt have SAT or Act they just deferred them. I hardly know anyone who got in without Sat score although they were optional this year. 7 British applicants applied. I was one of them. Out OF US seven, only 1 got in and he had his SAT with him. Other 6, we all got deferred and none of us had SAT because test centres cancelled it due to Corona

Well it was a 7% admissions rate this year, so 1/7 is actually beating the odds!

Very late to the party but deferred also. 36 ACT/4.0 from rural high school, polyglot, and provisional patent. Honestly, it’s whatever because I have a full ride at the state school for Mechanical Engineering so I’m not too concerned.

No I don’t think the SAT score is the problem because I know people with perfect SAT scores that got deferred this year

I am wondering how 7% gets into 1/7 calculation. Just curious.

With a 7% admit rate, just “I hardly know anyone who got in” would be understandable even without a qualifier.

1/7=14.3% and 7%=1/14

Maybe my math not good enough for Harvard… Am I missing anything here?

Are you all going to upload LOCIs to Harvard?

I was saying that because of the 7% admissions rate, if someone knows 7 people that applied, and one got in, technically the odds of that happening are pretty low.

That makes sense. Thanks.

@anonymous82927 I think your response was directed at the other poster, not me, my post while not in response to you was agreeing with your point. (Yes, 1 in 14 is lower odds than 1 in 7.)

Is anyone submitting supplement materials or just leaving their application as it is? I am thinking of adding an updated resume and an extra letter of recommendation, but just wondering if anyone else is doing the same.

I’m not sure if I will upload an additional letter of recommendation, but I will be uploading a different personal essay. Even though the first one I wrote is uploaded into my portal, I feel that it didn’t truly show who I am and how my world has shaped me. I honestly feel this is what made me get deferred instead of accepted.
