That’s great. I hope it goes well for him. I got a call today for an interview on Friday. Here’s to great interviews!
Best of luck to you!! He thought it went well. He had a great conversation and felt he made some good connections throughout the interview.
did ur son get accepted?
when did you apply?
Yes, he did.
October 18th!
congratulations!
Was the contact via phone only or did the contact also via email?
I received a phone call only!
Just he was a abnormally great kid but had some serious issues with losing temper and he had shaped his essays all around it. He was accepted but decided not to enroll due to family problems. He is now in a community college here at my country.
Just calm down and think that if you’ll email them then that can have two consequences, one that they think you didn’t pay much attention to your essay or second they think that you have done something innocently wrong. Try to figure out what impact that line has on your essay then work it out.
Update on my alumni interview:
It went great! I was really really nervous but once it got started the conversation was very natural. Practicing with my parents beforehand helped immensely.
Congratulations! I’m glad it went well! I have mine tomorrow and I am very excited.
Any International student applying RD get the interview ?
Not yet. I am from India btw.
Do you guys know how long it takes for a professor typically to reply to an email? I want to mention in my LOCI that I’ve spoken to a professor (it was a question about a book they wrote) but its already the 10th of January so i dunno if i should wait any longer since LOCI should be sent asap. I sent the email on the 22nd of December btw so a lot of time has passed already.
You sent the email over semester breaks. And it’s still semester break There should have been no expectation of a response during that time. And if you were cold emailing, there also should have been no expectation of a response.
Your LOCI can indicate interest in this professor’s work without actually having spoken to him/her.
For deferral , how do you send extra recommendation letter. Can the recommender email to admission or they have to upload through common app or the link they provided for additional recommendation. Here what states on their deferral letter: Any official school documents, such as updated grades or additional teacher recommendations, must be submitted at your request by your school. School officials can send such material by using the common app, coalition app, universal app, or slate
Hi,
I just had my interview so here are a few things I learned for anyone who is soon to have them. Personally, I feel like it’s really easy to get nervous, but don’t be! I found my interviewer on LinkedIN prior to our interview and that definitely helped per what to expect. Also, setting up your video background beforehand and joining the call early can help you take back minutes that may be missed due to connection issues.
When I did research on the Internet and on Harvard beforehand, they made it seem like the questions would all be very particular. I wasn’t even asked why I wanted to go to Harvard during my interview - which is a question most are asked (I brought it up myself towards the end). Instead, my interviewer and I took the time to build on other more interesting facets of our mutual interests. Instead of talking only about books, we delved into the ethical reasonings behind them. Rather than only talking about a class, we related it to social value. It was in the last 10-20 minutes that I spoke more about my extracurriculars and even then it just moved into more global topics.
Whatever you do, make sure you are passionate about what you are talking about and that you know what you are saying.I would say something about literature and my interviewer came up with a follow up question (ie. have you read xyz). If you don’t know an answer at least try to connect it to your own understanding of the topic. My interviewer said a name that I had been familiar with but didn’t know very well so I discussed a similar issue; he went on to explain who he was and afterwords I could relate it to what I said before.
Overall, the interview is supposed to be a fun process. I loved talking to my interviewer about the world. It was to the point where we went over time because we were bouncing ideas; he hadn’t asked me the latter formal questions until the very end. I was lucky because my interviewer majored in my own field but I’m sure if you are very interested in something you can garner conversation. Also make sure to use anecdotes if you can. For me it was easier to distinguish my personality in this way; considering that your interviewer knows people from your school/region, let them know what makes you unique.
Finally send a thank you email! Especially now, people are taking time out of their busy schedules to discuss with you. Explain what you valued about meeting with them and, if there is anything you missed in the moment, mention it.
Good luck on your interviews. Hoped this helped some of you!
Every interview is different. Remember that you are interviewing Harvard, as well. Maybe it’s not a good fit. Ask questions to make sure it is.
