Very interesting numbers in that article:

4231 EA applicants
772 admitted
2838 deferred
546 denied
25 withdrew
50 incomplete

Odds are better that you will be admitted than rejected!

The most interesting part is that the denial is only 12.9% :-). Fitzsimmons left himself a lot of wiggle rooms for the RD and it was also an indication that the EA pool is probably very good. The number of admission is slightly higher than my prediction but is clearly lower that what it was pre 2006.

I think a significant percentage of the admitted students are likely letter recipients

Quit scaring me!

^ Harvard used to send 200-300 athletic likelies in non-SCEA years, so you can assume a similar number of students will be admitted athletes this year.

^But how many do you think applied early? 100-150?

Almost all of them.

I believe approx 200 likelies sent to EA, about half to athletes or is it 300 and 200 to athletes? Think former…and they generally apply early.

Or there are not enough applicants for the RD.

That seems really high considering Duke was 22.5% for Trinity, and they have some pretty heavy athletic recruitment. Of course Harvard’s applicants should be more competitive, but 18% seems pretty high to someone without much knowledge of H admissions.

^Because many of the admits are athletes, legacies, and children of politicians/professors who must apply early to secure their “special” consideration.

If you apply early and are not a recruited athlete, is it possible to get a likely letter (before youre the early action notification date)?

Harvard typicaly sends 100 academic (actually non-athletic is a more appropriate term) likely letters. In my freshman suite of 5, we have 3… :)

Thanks for the reply! But is this for early, or regular, or both?

I’d reckon its for both but I cannot be sure since Harvard just reinstated the early action program.

A likely letter is sent out before everyone else receives their decision. It says that your very likely to be admitted unless you mess up your grade. Most schools offer it to recruited athletes or the Creme de la Creme of applicants :D

Lol even Georgetown was more selective this year.

wow it must be cool to get both a likely letter and an early acceptance :o
