I am in Canaday this year. Honestly, I have no clue why people call it the projects. You don't go to Harvard for the aesthetically pleasing dorms on the outside... Canaday is great. Close to everything!!! You really begin to appreciate it more now (exam season) when I am only a foot away from Cabot library... no long walk back home. I love it there!!! My own heating, my own single in a room with 4 other girls... I am spoiled!

blanches NO CABLE TV??
thinks of missing House and 24
.
.
.
goes to Yale

lol jk jk

House and 24 aren't cable :)

You are going to have heck of a time trying to watch broadcast TV with the reception quality in Cantabrigia.

Another great thing about Canaday, if you happen to have one of the dorms in Canaday facing Annenberg, you are going to appreciate it during the winter, when you can just look outside your window and see if there's a long line in front of Annenberg and avoid waiting outside in the cold.

Plus, Canaday Common Room has CABLE

Common room cable outlet + a splitter + a reel of coaxial cable + some ingenuity might lead to your bedroom having cable also.

Or you could do what some folks in Lionel did...put a satellite dish on Harvard's gate.

I'm in a complete single. It has its perks, it has its downfalls. I'm sure you can guess: I'm much more productive, I don't worry about fighting for space, I have tons of privacy. People like to come to my room when we have to review for classes or just have a one-to-one talk. Then again, it gets lonely. Usually, I can fix this by walking downstairs (the guys are up until 2 or 3am), but if it happens at an odd hour, it's too bad. Luckily, I've really never had problems with the loneliness factor ... I love having a single.

which harvard dorms have complete singles?

About television- I'm a TV junkie, and I've never had to miss a show. I know some people that have an HD antenna on their room (the reception is great), and when they're not around I jump from common room to common room. I can definitely guarantee that you won't be missing Grey's Anatomy, there's ALWAYS multiple common rooms watching it. (House and 24 too).

Depending on the house you're in, it's also certainly possible to get cable by splicing it from one of the common rooms.

Anyone who complains about missing television at Harvard just isn't industrious enough!

Complete singles: Canaday and Greenough.

I know someone in Apley who has a single as well, but that's an anomaly, I believe.

if you get a room in a suite, does your room lock?

Nope, no separate key for a room in a suite. At least, as far as I know, they don't lock.

Also, if you've a single within a suite, mostly you'll have to rotate out (usually 3 rms for 4 people, or 4 rooms for 5 people, or in Weld, sometimes 4 rooms for 6 people). Most people don't stay in a single all year round, unless 1) their suitemates don't mind, 2) they're really lucky with the number of people in their suite [i don't really know anyone in a 4 for 4, do i ...?], or 3) they "draw straws" and are the one or two lucky people who don't rotate.

Or, of course, like me. A complete single ...

if we request it, will they remove furniture from our rooms? like if we want to bring our own beds or desks?

I don't think so (and I have absolutely no idea why you'd want to bring your own bed, it sounds like a lot of trouble getting it there and up the stairs...).

My roommate and I did remove a door from our closet (we put a refrigerator in there) and we hid the door in the basement hoping no one would notice, but I think it has since disappeared (which might be a problem at the end of the year). Anyway, you have some options when it comes to furniture, like moving in a couch, but I'm not sure wha you can do with a desk

I think Yard Ops would gladly remove any Harvard-issued furniture you don't want. I wouldn't suggest getting a bed freshman year–there just isn't room. However, many upperclassmen who know they'll have singles for a year end up buying beds (common in Mather, especially).

the only thing id suggest bringing is a chair, the ones they give are pretty awful

i ask mainly because the beds do not look very good for your back or comfortable. can anyone comment on this? thanks.

I found that the beds are actually quite comfortable with a fluffy mattress pad. I have one of those egg carton ones and it was much easier to get up the stairs than a whole bed would be and when I went home for break I realized that my dorm bed was more comfortable than my bed at home. Probably not the same for everyone, but I think you can make the bed comfortable without a lot of trouble.
