Harvard/Duke Legacy

Let me cut to the chase. My dad attended Duke for undergraduate major, and he attended Havard Business School for his MBA. He is very involved in both schools, but more Harvard. He does alumni interviews, we go to every HBS event in our area, and every 4 years we go for his reunion. I have good grades in high school, (4.3 gpa, good ecs, lots of AP). I was wondering if his legacy would factor into my admission at harvard university, the undergrad program, because he went to business school not the undergrad? I know im a lock at duke, i visit every year, and every year the head admissions officer comes over to our house, and he knows us well. My dad also interviews for them. Will i get a legacy at harvard undergrad if my dad attended HBS? Thanks.

Harvard’s definition of a legacy: The son’s and daughter’s of graduates from Harvard College or Radcliffe College. As such, Harvard College Admissions will NOT consider you a legacy applicant, as your father graduated from HBS and not Harvard College. See: https://www.thecrimson.com/article/2018/6/20/admissions-docs-legacy/

I don’t think that the fact that the admissions head visits your house means you are a “lock” at Duke, though having a parent who went there gives you legacy status that might help.

Think about getting in on your own merits.

I think that your chances of admission to Duke are very, very high if you apply ED.

Do you mean Christoph Guttentag? He is the head of admissions at Duke? The admissions rate for legacies at Duke is about the same as Harvard.

Choose Duke for undergrad ED. A bird in the hand…

Go to HBS for business school.

I don’t think that Mr. Guttentag would be too pleased at your boasting about your inside connections here on a public forum.

“I know im a lock at duke”.

By any chance are you a HS All American basketball player likely to go in the first round of the NBA draft? If so you are a lock.

Otherwise it’s great to be confident but I would caution you to remember if you don’t get the grades you won’t get the acceptance letter. Your family connections will help if they are as you describe but only so far.

Also how would you feel spending four years surrounded by kids who worked their buts off to get to Durham while you took a shortcut? My suggestion isn’t that you not take (yes double negative) advantage of what you have, but also earn it on top of that advantage. Dig in and prove you aren’t just an entitled legacy kid.

Good luck.

The problem that you have (besides many others) is that YOU are NOT your Dad.

Admission is based on YOU being a good academic risk and YOU being a football star, not your Dad. Admissions is reviewed by committee members, and you don’t get to tell them that you are a LOCK!

Boasting, about being at a dinner, that was hosted by your FATHER, doesn’t mean anyone was there to see you.
The dean of admissions may get really PO’d at hearing that you are PUBLICLY naming him in a PUBLIC forum. It will backfire on you because you are taking liberties with someone’s reputation.

4.6 and 36 btw

@SkiingIsLife- “I have good grades in high school, (4.3 GPA)”

“I took the act and got a 35.”

Congratulations on getting your GPA up .3 in the last 18 days and your ACT up a point since 10/23!!

In your first thread in September you say you are a sophomore, so you took the ACT as a sophomore multiple times? I admire your initiative.
