Nicked this from Stanford. It's a great idea.

I guess I will start:

Accepted: Passion for science and medicine (internships, clubs, jobs), good scores, well-rounded (water polo, eagle scout), leadership, teacher recs

Deferred: few Bs, 3 years foreign lang, perhaps an average essay

Accepted: Recruited athlete, also i'm writing a book (it's not published, but i'm 47,000 words into it, and it's science-fiction/fantasy so it's pretty creative)

Deferred: No national awards, typical white female overachiever from NJ

Rejected: Three other kids from my school applying, one of whom is valedictorian with perfect SAT's

Accepted: "Most Oustanding Grade 11 Student" last year in a class of 650 (award based on grades + ec's), MUN awards (including a Harvard Award of Excellence from HCME 2005),good grades in a difficult course load (french immersion IB diploma), 95th percentile on the National Biology Competition, and a rec from a teacher who named her baby partially after me (same name, different spelling) :)

Deferred: this other kid from my school is applying and his sister is at Harvard. because I'm an international, I think legacy might play in. also, I'm JUST taking my SATs, so I'm not sure how great they'll be (damn only having 25 minutes for an essay! even History paper 3 IN FRENCH is better, and that's saying a lot!). Also my chem mark right now could be way better :S

Rejected: international admission rates = loads of uber-qualified competition. not that going to H would make my life though, cause McGill rocks just as much... it's more of a keeping my options open thing.

Accept: 2390 SAT, High GPA, very active, recruited athlete
Defer: Mediocre essay and Harvard doesn't seem to like my school that much
Denied: Poor SAT2's (700, 710, 750) or the adcom doesn't like what they see. Who really knows? This process is crazy - no matter how hard one works or how good their grades, scores and extracirriculars are, no matter if you are a recruited athlete or the world's best musician, you can still be denied. I'm gonna be pretty anxious till I hear...

haha very unique thread. me like
accept - very nice performing arts stats, medical class/interns, a "normal person" person trying to get in... lol
defer - asian, top 10 or 15%, 6 b's (2 in hist, 4 in english =()
reject - asian, 2000 sat I, 700 (hopefully better) sat ii's, crazy people trying for ea

accept: research (and lots of it), including a rec from my harvard mentor that I'm about to publish with
deferred: another kid from my school who isn't going to get rejected
rejected: same as deferred + mediocre essays

Accept: 2400 SAT, high gpa, national-caliber fencer, all-state violinist, volunteering at Smithsonian, good essay
Defer: Kid who won a gold medal at IPho is also applying
Reject: No RSI or USAMO

accepted: I was very successful in my harvard summer school classes - legal writing and intro to international relaltions. My legal writing prof supposedly wrote me a really great rec according to my college admissions counselor. I have done an insane about of community service, including starting a program where my high school cafeteria donates food to the homeless, as well as a program that connects my school body to the homeless guys at SEARCH, a local shelter. (For the later program I won an award from the mayor of Houston.) I started college early, this year, at the University of Houston because I was so bored in my high school classes. I still have "high school classification" as I haven't graduated yet from high school (my high school is counting the english I'm taking in college this year as high school english as well, and that is what I need to graduate), so therefore I won't have to compete with the transfers, which is way harder. My physics professor now graduated from Harvard, and hopefully he will write me a great rec.

deferred: no academic awards.

Rejected: Mediocore test scores. My grades from junior year were really bad because I was so bored. Imagine going from Harvard back to high school -- not a good idea.

accepted: passionate about slightly unusual EC (irish dance) but not nationally ranked cause I only compete within my region, low income, tons of community service, great recs, hopefully essays are just as great too
deffered: low-ish SATs slightly low GPA for harvard
Rejected: IF the accept someone else from my school? I have no connections and no real hook and stats are not super high
