Harvard Emails to Students?

i was thinking about applying to Harvard, but doubting...
then comes this letter.

So I received an e-mail from Harvard. I don't have exactly amazing stats.... (nope, no 2400 no 5.0 GPA).

I've heard that Harvard does not send out letters because they know that students will apply no matter what!

obviously i'm asian... (considered a minority by Harvard?! I didn't think asians are minorities but this came from the office of reaching out to minorities?)

Does Harvard send out an e-mail to every student? or do they somehow selected certain candidates? Does anyone know? Also, the big question. So does this mean that I should apply? I know that I don't have that great of chances, but inviting me to apply suggests that they're showing interest in me as a student?

Thanks so much in advance! :]

On behalf of Asian-American organizations on campus, we would like to congratulate you on your considerable academic achievements and invite you to apply to Harvard.

Harvard provides a challenging and stimulating environment for both your academic and extracurricular pursuits. Classes with acclaimed professors, research opportunities in all disciplines, and world-class facilities will contribute to your academic enrichment. More than 300 student organizations provide a wealth of extracurricular options from drama to media to community service. The Asian-American community at Harvard has an active presence on campus, and supports numerous groups exploring South-Asian, Southeast-Asian, and East-Asian cultures.

While Harvard is renowned for its academic excellence, we strongly believe that one of our greatest strengths is the exceptional diversity of the student body. Our students span a wide range of nationalities, ethnicities, socioeconomic backgrounds, religious convictions, and intellectual interests. Almost 40% of the student body is composed of minority students, with Asian-Americans representing 18% of all undergraduates.

As representatives of the Harvard Asian-American community, we would like to encourage you to consider applying to our university. Please contact us with any questions you have about life at Harvard or the application process.
A friend of mine was a national merit finalist and received a similar letter, but from the general University, not the Asian-American Association.

Yeah, I got it too.

They send it out to a lot of people. It's not indicative of their interest in you.

(After all, Harvard sends out 70,000 letters every year inviting students to apply...)

I received the same time of letter from the Undergrad Admissions Office, probably from my PSAT/SAT/ACT

To the contrary, Harvard is second to none in its diligence in recruiting students.

I got one but it was for African-Americans.

It doesn't mean that they have a particular interest in you though.

harvard is just like any other school...they recruit a lot of applicants and then reject 90 percent of them to become "selective" and ranked higher.

I just got the same thing as you today. It doesn't mean anything. They're just trying to get as many people to apply as possible so they can select from the best.

I would be honored. That's pretty cool. Take it for what its worth though.

I got an email and they also called me and asked me if I had any questions about Harvard admissions.. Is that special? @_@

i also received that email...but for African Americans.

I got one for Mexican-Americans. I don't think it means much -- how else will they have such a high selectivity rating if they don't do everything they can to get everyone to apply?

I got one for Mexican-Americans too. I'm not sure what it means. I definitely did not get a phone call though :(

got that one today, too, but for Asian-Americans.

i personally don't think it's worth much. it's just a letter.

yuuup. Got one for my Asian-Americanness. :P

If I got one, it clearly doesn't mean much.

Why do you say that?
