Hello everybody I was wondering if I had any chance at getting recruited for golf by Harvard, or for that matter any of the Ivies. Currently I am a sophomore and I have a 5 handicap. I have all the grades and test scores to be able to apply for Harvard and these schools. I would just like to know if there is any chance of being recruited and thank you to all.

5 handicaps in High school are plentiful. Get down to scratch and you can start talking.

Look up the stats of the current Harvard golf team. Although a 5 handicap may not cut it for the top golf teams (ie- UCLA) in the country, you may have a chance at an Ivy because they factor grades in a lot more. According to the Golfweek rankings, Harvard is ranked 217, so since you’re a decent player, you have a shot at it. Just play in a bunch of junior tournaments to get your name out there, and demonstrate interest in joining the Harvard team. As a sophomore, you still have plenty of time to get your handicap down.
Good luck!

For comparison Seiji Liu, a freshman on the Harvard Golf team with the 3rd best scoring average on the team (out of 8 on the roster) has a handicap of + 2.7 , better than scratch by almost 3 strokes.

I know a 2 handicap that can’t make his college team.

+2.7 would be 3 strokes over par.

You would be wrong. A + 2.7 would give 3 strokes to a scratch or 18 strokes to a 15 handicap.

It is possible to have a handicap below 0; these are referred to as ‘plus’ handicaps, and at the end of the round, a ‘plus’ handicap golfer must add his handicap to his score.

LOL haha. a friend of mine who was a -1 handicap with a 2240 and a 4.4 didn’t get recruited to Harvard. Good luck!

Here is the scoring average for the team

A couple years ago one of the players from my HS was recruited from my HS but did not have the grades to cut it, he was nothing amazing but he was good. I think he was about a scratch.

Check out the bios of players on different teams to figure out what they’ve accomplished to get there. It’s very helpful to gauge yourself with them.
Also: with the example of Seiji, he was top 10 in the country for the class of 2010 per the Golfweek Rankings when he was recruited. But he tore a ligament in his ankle over the summer and broke his big toe as well. That had a very detrimental effect on his season.

Just a heads up, you could have the entire package of golf, grades, ec’s, etc. But if the team members don’t like you on your official or unofficial visits, chances are lower that you will get in. Be friendly, engaging, fun and polite. It goes a long way.
Also play in a lot of AJGA’s or other top tier events if possible. They attract a lot of attention and get you on the map.
The best goal to be recruited by a top Ivy or school such as Stanford etc. would be to earn the AJGA’s HP Scholastic All-American Award.

My friend had a 2300, 4.0 unweighted 5.1 weighted, and scratch handicap, yet he still didn’t get recruited to any Ivies.

To all those posting about your “freinds” who are great golfers with even better stats… If they did not get recruited it is most likely because they did not take the initiative to contact the coaches, play in the tournaments, and develop a good golf resume. I am a 1 handicap and have 2200 SAT and a mediocre 3.5 UW and am getting attention from a few Ivies becuase I have put in the time to contact and get to know the coaches.

My handicap is 5 too but I havent played in any major tournaments or anything.

The IB doesnt give anyone enough time to prepare and enroll in golf tournaments but I guess if I sacrificed academics for golf then I could possibly play (and win?) a few tournaments.

I guess I dont have much of a chance at Harvard but what about Division III? Im particularly talking about Amherst and Harvey Mudd College. Do I have any chance there?

Also does the fact that I am Indian help? Are there many Indians who get recruited as an athlete?

Harvard is a crapshoot for anyone, so being a decent golfer and having great grades still doesn’t do much to increase your chances. Their admission rate is single digits, and I’m sure there are plenty of golfers trying to get into the Ivies. Sorry, but a 5 handicap probably isn’t enough.
