Harvard grad 2014 - Ask questions about Harvard here!

How much does the name “Harvard” do more for you compared to your peers of other institutions? Does it really matter, or as long as its close its basically same as any other Ivy or top institution?

Is there a sizable population of entrepreneurs at Harvard? Entrepreneurship is one of my interests

@compmom No I have no idea… please enlighten me!

Well, google it. The university is at war with final clubs. Various sanctions have been applied or threatened for members. The prestigious ones are single sex, for males, though there are some for females in more recent years. The reasons for the shut down shift around, and include addressing sexual assault on campus, gender discrimination, issues of exclusivity and access to careers through networking and more. The video posted here is a bit dated.

As for entrepreneur, there are many at Harvard Business School of course. Undergrads, yes, but no formal program. There are entrepreneurial types at lots of colleges.

The impact of the Harvard name has pluses and minuses and some grads will try to hide where they went because they get tired of the reaction. At work, you might have a boss who went to state U or who labels you as “smart” and has expectations that are too high etc.

What are typical class sizes freshman year? Any difference in subject areas- e.g., between an English or history class and a biology class?

Totally depends upon the class. CS50 and Ec10a will generally have around 800 students enrolled for lecture, although TF-led sections will be around 12. Intro bio/chem classes and some popular (read easier) gen ed classes will also have several hundred students. However, average class size is about 40, and half have fewer than 10 students. Expos 20, a requirement, is capped at 15. Freshman Seminars are capped at 12-15.

Could you please tell about professional atmosphere for those who recruiting for jobs at banks? Is it possible to get an internship in a big investment bank in NY? How competitive is it among Harvard students? Thank you in advance!

Recruiting for a job in a “big investment bank in NY” is a few years away. Internships are often between junior and senior years though some people get them after sophomore year.

I would think other questions might be on your mind at this point in time, about the actual Harvard experience.

A few years back I believe 40% of grads went into finance or consulting, and I also read that the administration was trying to change that, and increase diversity of career interests on campus. (Part of that was enhancing applied arts, music, dance, film and theater, for instance. )

Everything is potentially competitive among Harvard students. Try your best not to contribute to that if you attend.

I am curious about why you named yourself josephstalin002.

I have a question about freshman advising. I’ve been assigned a peer advisor, a proctor and a freshman advisor. My freshman advisor and proctor are one and the same. From his bio, we don’t share an academic interest. Is it possible to request a reassignment to an advisor in my planned concentration?

My cousin is starting school at Harvard tomorrow. What are some things that you would recommend every Harvard kid do or take advantage of? Fun stories?

BHS0116, as I remember, once you declare a concentration (end of sophomore year) you will get an advisor in your department. The advisor/proctor you currently have will most likely be fine for now. Freshman deal with foreign language requirements, freshman writing seminars, gen eds and the first courses in intended concentration for those who are sure of what they want to study. It’s not rocket science  You’ll be fine.

You don’t declare your concentration until sophomore year, at which time you will get a concentration advisor As @compmom says, your freshman advisor/proctor/peer advisor will be more than sufficient for your first year needs.

Aside from the traditional bucket list: pee on the John Harvard statue, run in Primal Scream, and have sex in the Widener stacks?

@skieurope You forgot that the whole campus can actually transform into a space ship and fly into space. It’s really fun stuff!!

I skimmed the other comments here and didn’t see anyone ask this, so I hope I’m not repeating a question. Do the Harvard students drink the tap water in the dorms, in general? Or do they buy bottled water or filters for the tap water? I’m sure the water in Boston is safe, but I’m just wondering what most kids do. We are from the burbs and drink tap water at home!

^^ My daughter drank tap water for all 4 years at Harvard. We sent her off with a brita filter slim water container for her mini-fridge – but I don’t think she ever used it.

Thanks @gibby ! Appreciate the answer.

  1. Do you know any conservative Christians at Harvard?

  2. Do you think Malia Obama’s presence on campus will be a distraction?

What’s up, friends! I’m a rising junior at Harvard College concentrating in Government. Ask me anything.
