Harvard houses

How are freshmen placed into dorms? How do you become associated with a particular house?

Freshmen are randomly placed into dorms, and in later years they are assigned houses. As a sophomore, you can pick up a certain number of people with whom you want to be placed into the same residential house (I think that’s what I’ve been told when I was visiting, if I remember correctly).

You “block” to make a group of up to 8 people that get assigned to a house together.

Your group of up to 8 can also “link” with another group of up to 8 to get put in nearby houses.

and you are randomly assigned to a house with your group-no choice of your house.

And the blocking exercise is in the second semester of your freshman year. The day that you find out your house is a big event.

Freshman dorms are assigned randomly as well. Actually, each freshman is sorted into a yard (there are actually a few for this purpose) and then placed with roommates after filling out a survey.
