Harvard Likely Letters

One of the older threads posted an article, The Harvard Crimson :: News :: Likely Letters on the Rise

According to this article, Harvard will be sending out many more non-athletic likely letters within the next two weeks. I'm just wondering if anyone has received one. Please post. thanks.

I guess no one's gotten them yet.

that was before the crimson article. i am also very curious to see when/to whom the likelies will be handed out.

has anyone read the NY Times article about how colleges like Harvard are lowering their admissions standards (& possibly engaging in unethical/illegal practices) to recruit athletes? I bet those athletes are the ones they hand the likelys to.

"Harvard will be sending out many more non-athletic likely letters"

most of harvard's initial likelies were to athletes, but, ostensibly, these new ones will go to those who are not recruited athletes.

Great news! It's a bit late lol to really calm the nerves of students who have been waiting months for a likely letter. But sooner is better than never of course. :p.

has anyone gotten one?

do you guys think these will only go out to people with awesome hooks like 1st in international competitions or research?

or also to normal applicants with stellar academics and strong everything else?

normal well-rounded applicants with stellar academics and wonderful (not super uber amazing) ECs receive likely letters too. It's not just the international #1 hook thank god. =)

I think anyone 'waiting' for a likely letter might be acting a little presumptuous...

from what i've read, i think likely letters will be given to those who least expect it, like those who are home-schooled or come from disadvantaged backgrounds, etc. the uber amazing probably already expect to get in, so it won't realli be a big deal to send likelies to them.

nobody "expects" to get in to harvard. or, at least, nobody should. it's way too random.

Considering the overabundance of the "well-rounded" applicants Harvard has seen this year, I'm guessing that a likely letter recipient will have to be unique in his pursuits. Likelies are meant for students who are too precious to be lost to some other school; and I don't think a "well-rounded" applicant is unique. Frankly, there are too many of them and they look the same on paper.

"has anyone read the NY Times article about how colleges like Harvard are lowering their admissions standards (& possibly engaging in unethical/illegal practices) to recruit athletes? I bet those athletes are the ones they hand the likelys to."

i take offense to that.

haha, it's funny how no one here has received one since the harvard crimson article. :)

yah...but i think those that received it are probably not ones that go on this site.

or, perhaps, they haven't been sent out yet.

let's hope so =)
but don't they call ppl first to let them know before sending out the official likely letter?

Haven't been sent out yet? Why would they send them out now?

It's two weeks to decisions anyway, would seem like a waste of time to me with official decisions so close at hand.
