Harvard Optional Essay

i wrote an essay that is rather unusual, more philosophical. hopefully it should be alright as a supplement. anyone interested to comment on it? i enjoyed writing it.

I used my Chicago essay, the “How did you get caught?” prompt. I just added a sentence or two so it didn’t sound as insane.

I wrote a short essay about how I got over stage fright. I liked it because it showed a more personal side of me, and showed my love for music.

Haha, thanks Stupefy
I do realize that. It definitely wasn’t a direct quote from my essay. I was quickly paraphrasing and didn’t have the time to write out full sentences.

I did mine on my disenchantment with life, in particular, the meaninglessness of our contemporary culture. I’m almost worried that it makes me sound like a misanthrope or slacker. I also added a sappy ending about how life should be about discovery and self-pleasure. And my common app was about the influence of my friend Alex. It was shallow and I think I gave him to much credit but being genuine and saying he influenced me to think and act a certain way although I would have arrived at the same conclusions indepedently would not make for some good reading. Oh well

hey dorime, i kinda wrote something similar bout urs, treading on a certain disenchantment with life through people living in the same old predicament set by others. U wanna exchange? :)

HAHA LOL EVERYONE used their princeton/yale/chicago essay!! I only used the same two essays for all of my schools. BUT stanford was a killer and had to write three more essays.

Everyone here reused essays
I feel like such a tard. Each essay I didn’t reuse any essays (though I did use the same anecdotes occasionally).

Same as my Yale supplement

i wrote why i want to become a lawyer. talked about my rough child hood XO

ahahahaaa it’s surprising how many ppl used their Princeton supp essay =]

oh well, I did too

I didn’t submit an optional essay. I did not want to recycle an essay from any of the other schools that I applied to.

I made a book list. I thought about using my U Chi essay but I didn’t because I didn’t think it fit what they were looking for in their optional essay. I did use it for Yale though.

Just wondering
for those who made the book list, how long was it?

And it’s an essay discussing books, right? Not an actual

You know, like that?

No, mine was just a list. I broke it up by season and I had 70 titles. Maybe I would have considered adding a little essay, but it was over five hundred words long already, and I thought my Common App essay was good enough that an actual second essay wouldn’t be necessary. The prompt suggestion just said to list, but obviously you could do whatever you wanted with it.

I wrote about an author/books that had influenced me [and that I’d really liked.]

SEVENTY BOOKS!!! My God, I’ve read about
5 books in 2009 (I assume comic books don’t count :D). Thank god I chose to write a different essay. lol

I discussed unusual life circumstances. :stuck_out_tongue: I really wanted to do the book list, but then I realized I’ve read maybe five books in the past year that weren’t for school
yeah

I originally planned to do the booklust. But I’ve been writing applications for the entire year, summer program ones in the beginning, and ones for college from summer on, with a whole lot of other stuff in between. So I only read about 30 books instead of my usual 50. And my common app essay was about books, so I didn’t want to look like I just had one story.
Even though I “recycled” an essay, I felt like that was the story I undoubtedly wanted to tell colleges. I had even gone back and forth on making it by com app essay. So I don’t feel like I was slacking.

Good God that’s a lot of books. I only had about 20, but I listed periodicals too. (For the benefit of Millancad) I basically recycled my TASP booklist and replaced the older titles with new ones.
