Please give your thoughts.....beyond rural vs urban.....Thanks

well first off, what do you want to study?

second off, doesn't posting in the dartmouth section sort of automatically give it an edge?

The size and focus of the two schools are vastly different. Harvard is a large university with a strong focus on its graduate programs, where Dartmouth is a much smaller college with a strong focus on its undergraduate program. Of the two, only you can decide which is best for you. It should be stated, however, that you will likely have more access to professors and more chances to participate in faculty research, etc. at Dartmouth than you would at Harvard.

On the other hand, going to Harvard allows you to be able to "drop the H-Bomb" later on down the road.

Really, the decision is yours. They're both great schools, and they both have their own benefits and drawbacks (as every school does). You have to see what works best for you.

And, as Anonymous99 pointed out, you're just asking for a Dartmouth-biased view to post it here! :p Post a copy of the thread on the Harvard board too and let's see what they have to say over there. I'm curious.

I think you'd get better info if you gave us more specific information about your intended course of study, etc. The people on these boards have wonderful information to pass on and are very helpful, but asking them to cover every difference they know between the two is too much. Like I could talk for two pages about something like the science department difference in research opportunities, notable faculty, etc. and then find out that's not what you wanted and I'd be like "ahgeiljgalkjgklajkljgklaj what a waste of my time, dude." And that's assuming the daunting breadth of this question doesn't scare away everyone. Usually when people ask School A v School B they'll give some extra indvdl info like money is an issue, i'm studying ________, or even "I'm a junior and know nothing about the two so don't even know what specifically to ask all of you" which would help us tailor our response to give you what you need and save us all a lot of time to go respond to other CC threads. :)

as much as i LOVE dartmouth, i must agree!

although the reply seems to come too late, reference for students with similar dilemmas in the future:

visit both schools and stay overnight. but not during the official recruitment weekends. and then make ur decisions.

I'm confused, what's this Dartmouth you guys keep talking about?

Billy,

Its a college.

Many students, upon graduating high school, will decide that they would like to learn a bit more about stuff, some even become very smart and importantlike rap stars or MTV VJs (well, not that important).

I see that you are 17.
I assume, based on your age and your uber-clever post, that you will have the chance to graduate from high school in the next, say, 3 or 4 years. You may want to consider attending a college, cosmetology or trade school (which is also a form of higher education) after graduation or obtaining your GED.

Sadly, Dartmouth doesnt have a cosmetology school, and though I do not attend Harvard, I dont believe theyve gotten around to ponying-up for one either (a quick glance at the anti-fashionistas at Harvard would go a long way toward proving that).

Good luck, and think about it you might be college-materialcosmetology, or liberal arts or who knows, fashion design.

You go get em, Billy!

Don't be hard on Billy. Take this on absolute faith, but there is a sophomore at Dartmouth who two years ago when I talked to her had no clue where or what Yale was. Dad went to Harvard. All she knew was Harvard. (earlier details deleted). I think she only applied Ivies and went to the one that took her - Big Green. I don't even think she knew much about the other Ivies where she applied. Didn't know much about Dartmouth either. Harvard was her #1 choice. The only school she knew anything vaguely about and wanted to go to was Harvard and would have attended Harvard over Dartmouth, no questions asked, if accepted.

Truly an informed consumer.

billy, why are you on the Dartmouth board if you dont even know what it is? lol

what is billy?

I think it's safe to say that billy might possibly be making an attempt at humor.

I think that's a safe assumption

billy failed at making funny.

or you just failed at getting it?

harvard, no contest....

if ur into prestige, harvard

for every 10 ppl, 4 of them, if ur lucky knows of dartmouth on a good day

in educated circles, it would be closer to 9.5 out of 10

harvard, will get 10/10 no matter if ur talking w. town junkies or educated ppl

take ur pick

My best friend went to Harvard and we both were at the same MBA program. Same scores, I actually had a slightly worse GPA. In the end we both got awesome jobs. The point is Dartmouth is clearly slightly less prestigious, but you can get the same out of it and in my opinion its a much better college experience for many students.
