Harvard or Princeton?

Don't know what I want to major in/what I want to do with life. Possible economics, possible pre-med,pre-law. What school is better?

Pre-med - Harvard
Pre-law - Harvard
Econ - Harvard

But that’s just by rankings…
They’re both really the same if not extremely similar in prestige.
It’s just a matter of personal opinion (location, etc.)

hi busy123, can you please post the data that supports your statement?

thanks

princeton for undergrad, imo.

Honestly, I’m not aware of anyone whose ever been an undergrad at both.

They’re just different environments. Princeton is smaller, more undergraduate focused, has grade deflation (though they’ll defend to the death that it doesn’t impede post-grad opportunities), a rigorous senior thesis, residential colleges, etc. Harvard is right near Boston, has more TAs teaching undergrads, has grade inflation, etcetc. If there’s ever a case where “They’re practically equal, pick the opportunity that’s best for you” has held true, it’s now.

You should go to Princeton for UG, since it doesn’t have med or law school. For graduate programs, top schools tends accept less of its own UG students for diversity purposes.

You’ll also have a bigger network if you do Princeton UG and Harvard Law/Med, than if you only Harvard + Harvard.

Those aren’t very good reasons. “Top schools tend to accept less of its own UG students for diversity purposes”… less than what? And you won’t necessarily have a bigger network going to Princeton for undergrad then Harvard grad school, because you will be meeting different people in college and grad school no matter where you go.

Which campus do you like better? Which one makes you feel more at home? I think between the choices, it’s about which one you fit in better with. You will get a quality education with either, name recognition, and similar doors will open. I believe that there is more focus on the UG at Princeton than at Harvard, but I think for the most part, you get out of the school what you ask of it / are willing to put into it, so your experience will be yours.

John F. Kennedy would be one I could think of.

They’re very different schools… do you really have no preference regarding campus life, location, etc?

Have you visited both/either? They are pretty different. Personal preference would decide.

when you think about it, both schools are so good academically that the differnce might be whether the student wants to spend those four years in the paradise called Princeton or in the thriving environment of Cambridge.

The visit, and hopefully overnight visit, will result in a clear cut decision.

There’s some truth to that for graduate programs in the arts & sciences. It’s NOT in the least true for either med or law school.

“You’ll also have a bigger network if you do Princeton UG and Harvard Law/Med”

This is nuts. The OP hasn’t been admitted to Harvard Law or Med, and wherever he goes to college, the odds are heavily against him being admitted down the road. The OP needs to make this choice under the assumption that this will be his only chance to go to Harvard. That’s going to be true for the vast majority of 2014 admits.

^^ jonri, tru dat.
