Harvard Or Stanford?

Prestige= Harvard>Stanford

Academics= probably depends. In the sciences, S>H.

With Harvard’s new aid package, money might not be an issue anymore.

“The one real negative of Stanford for me is its actual location: it’s in a bubble, and the closest city is Palo Alto, which isn’t a very interesting city IMO”

You have just identified the one thing that drove me nuts at Stanford. I had come from Mexico City (American School). I was comfortable in a metropolitan environment with tons of people/traffic/activity/diversity.

By my fifth month at Stanford, I became so stir-crazy that I jumped on my Schwinn 10 speed and pedaled due east until I crossed the railroad tracks. I had entered the poor section of Palo Alto (yes, this was a LONG time ago). I breathed a sign of relief when I passed a house with a semi-dead lawn and an old car in the driveway up on blocks. Finally, the real world!

P.S. Stanford is a “Junior University”. hehehe

P.P.S. - If the cultural fit is a push, I would take Stanford over Harvard with very little monetary incentive – perhaps as little as $10,000 per year differential.

That’s probably East Palo Alto? Is so, it’s actually not part of Palo Alto. :)

I actually went to PA last year to show what Stanford looked like to my friend. I hadn’t been back for over 5 years and I noticed more restaurants/stores had been added in downtown. It’s really not that bad.

I personally would choose Stanford, because I didn’t like Harvard that much when I went there for summer school last year- I know it was just summer school and not the ‘real’ Harvard like during the school year, but still I was kind of disappointed… can’t tell if I wouldn’t be disappointed about what I get in Stanford, too, but well, it’s worth a try. and maybe not for everyone but for me the weather is an issue, too.

Yes, and how expensive are those? =p

You probably know that the full name of Stanford, Leland Stanford Junior University, is the namesake of Leland Stanford, Jr. “Junior” has nothing to do with the type of institution it is.

Silly Stanford kids and their rabble-rousing Leland Stanford Junior b ** University Marching Band. Why do they call themselves a marching band when they scramble/scatter just like the rest of us?

Regards,

Ripe with great stories.

Ok, as an alum, I need to step in.

When Leland Stanford, Jr. died, his parents went to Harvard (dressed San Fran style) and wanted to donate some money in his honor. The President of Harvard saw these two country bumbkins and said they did not have enough, so no. ****ed them off, so they went back west and built Stanford. and now they are far ahead of the Stanford of the East (which some call Harvard)

In all ways Stanford is probably better than Harvard. There is no question. As an undergrad, I had Linus Pauling and several other Nobel prize winners teaching me – no grad students except for lab courses.

April Fool’s Day was yesterday, not today. :)

DunninLA #22: You should not have had to pedal too furiously to cross the railroad (Caltrain) tracks from Stanford. You probably mean you went up to Route 101 and were in East Palo Alto?

But I know what you mean- Stanford is a beautiful campus but it could get boring.

depends on what you want to study and whether you like warm weather all the time :)

oh man i’m jealous
