Harvard or UC Berkeley?

Wow. You are all smart as whips but your goals seem to revolve around whether you will be making more money than the next smart person 20 years from now and your criteria revolve around some vague conceits swimming in the ozone about what is "better" or "best." Does happiness figure at all in what you want in life? Did you forget that finding a college has to do with finding a "good fit?" Could UCB and Harvard be any more different from one another? Some people will thrive at one but not at the other. Some people need to make decisions based on finances, and if your choice is between these two schools then your ability to be flexible and find the advantages offered by the school that will ultimately cost you less is what's going to count. There are great things about UCB and great things about Harvard, just as there are great things about hundreds of other schools. I haven't seen a single post in this thread in which someone said: I want to go to X because I LOVE this or that about it. If you can't chose between UCB and Harvard maybe you should start looking at this process in a new way. I hope you all make choices that will make the next 4 years exciting and fun, surrounded and supported by friendly people whose goals in life are not to be "better" or make more money than you.

Amen to that.

PUT IT THIS WAY:
EVERYONE who is admitted to Harvard would be admitted to Berkeley.

The converse is not true.

It's unwise to make absolute comments. I know of several people who have been accepted to Harvard and rejected by Berkeley. Either rich Harvard legacies with non-hot grades or low-scoring URMs that Berkeley can't legally accept.

The vast majority of people who are admitted to Harvard would be admitted to Berkeley. That's a better statement.

Totally agree with leonsdaughter.

To hideANDseek:

Exactly the reason you want to be in Berkeley.
The world is no 'harvard mouth'. In fact, you'll
get a more accurate experience of the world
in Berkeley. Sorry, it's merely a matter of numbers.
1 billion plus Chinese. 1 billion plus Indians.
If you want to learn what ideas prevail in the
next decade, experience Berkeley in this decade!

that is true....finance is a problem...since i got my fafsa back and i really didnt get anything from them....so finance is a great factor in what college i go to.....

berkeley is nothign compared to harvard...

do you attend both schools?
