what's it like?

One of my friends, who otherwise loves harvard, said that most parties were lame, that final clubs skeeved her out. She apparently usually goes to MIT for parties.
That’s just one person though. And parties aren’t a huge part of her social activities.

It should be fairly obvious that Harvard’s party scene is out of this world. Literally. Most of the drugs people use at Harvard parties haven’t even been released to the public because of FDA restrictions.

^Good. That’s exactly what I’m looking for. I hope that one of them that you’re referring to is the alcohol pill invented by that Russian scientist.

Parties are there, you just have to get into them. This usually isn’t a problem if you’re a halfway-decent looking girl, or if you’re a male with friends who can let you in. If you’re an athlete or someone with friends in frats or final clubs, no problem usually. If you’re an upperclassmen of any sort, generally you’ll have enough friends to find parties or you can buy alcohol yourself anyway. If you’re a non-athlete freshman male without an alcohol-friendly EC organization who doesn’t really know that many people in finals clubs, good luck.

Is it difficult to drink in the freshman dorms?

In most (but not all) freshman dorms, it’s difficult to have huge parties because proctors usually live close by, not to mention freshman dorms don’t usually have enough space for that anyway. If you’re talking like 15 people or less, there shouldn’t be a big deal.

The actual alcohol isn’t a problem. Most proctors will only make a big deal if you slap them in the face with it. We’ve kept half-full bottles of rum around before and no one really pays attention, since you don’t often invite your proctor into your room to begin with.

okay, is it difficult getting the stuff? Any fake id vendors who cater to Harvard?

Probably. It’s been my experience that usually someone has a 21+ friend in an EC, on a team, or something else that will buy alcohol for them. I can’t think of any close friends that have fakes but I’ve run into people that have them.

@natim1 - I feel like a lot of real IDs get passed down from upperclassmen to underage folks (“Yo, you look sort of like me, want to buy my old driver’s license for $40?”)… less common to see people actually cranking out fake IDs.

More common than both of the options above is just getting an upperclass friend (or a 21 year old freshman – there are always a few per class) to buy you a handle or two.

okay, as a girl, do I need to bring my own? Or will it be available at parties. also, and this is a bit shady, but is it odd to take food out of the dining hall, say orange juice?

Parties hosted by students - whether they’re at a finals club or in one of the upperclass “party suites” - tend to have their own alcohol. People usually pregame + drink in smaller groups in dorm rooms, before heading out.

Parties hosted by the university tend not to have alcohol. That usually just means that people who drink pregame more before heading to these events.

In an upperclass dining hall, no one cares if you take food or drink out. We used to hit up the machines for ice + mixers all of the time. At Annenberg, the freshman dining hall, they’re sort of picky about this… I have no idea why. The worst they’ll do is yell at you, but it’s annoying.

Boy, times have changed…in my day, everybody had fakes. I was 22 when I came to Harvard, so for me it wasn’t an issue, but the freshman guys all had fakes.

I was greatly blessed in this area. I have a sister six years older who looks exactly like me. No one ever gave that ID a second glance back in high school.

Natim, girls never need to bring their own alcohol. That’s a law of nature. But my advice is to avoid anything served at frats or final clubs unless it comes out of a keg. I’ve never heard of anyone getting drugged at Harvard (or MIT or Tufts or BU), but that’s my advice to all young women at all open parties at all schools. Safety first.

i was pleasantly shocked to learn of a party scene at harvard but keep in mind i had to see it for myself…it wasn’t until prefrosh weekend when i had my taste of it. if you want to survey the social lie/night life, don’t be afraid to party-hop a bit.
as a girl who doesn’t drink, i have a lot of fun at the parties. there is, of course, alcohol always available if that floats your boat and the college has a good amnesty policy if something goes wrong (i gotta say, my class is reckless when it comes to the amount of students who have been admitted this year on alcohol related problems to UHS…) lol.
