Harvard, Princeton, Columbia, Georgetown, and others?

Sorry this is so long, you can skim if you wish :)

Female, top 10 public school in a competitive state.
GPA: 3.94 unweighted
SAT: 2380 (Math 780)
SAT II: Chem 800, Math 800, US History 780
Honors/AP Classes:
9th grade: all Honors

10th: Honors Precalc+English, AP chemistry, AP US History 1 (two-part course at my school), self studied AP Music Theory; got 5s in both AP exams
Studied French 4 because I've lived in England and I had a scheduling conflict that prevented me from taking Spanish.

11th: AP English lang, AP Bio, AP Calc AB, AP US 2, Honors Spanish 5 (reverted to Spanish)
5's on all exams

12th: AP English lit, AP Calc BC, AP Physics C, AP Econ, AP Gov, AP Spanish

Bottom line: challenged myself as much as my school could possibly allow, attained proficiency in 2 languages instead of one, and got a few A-minuses. Won't be valedictorian or salutatorian, as my school is full of people that have no lives and study all day. :P But will be in top 1 or 2 % of my graduating class.

ECs:
-Model UN: 2-time elected President of General Assembly, nominated for Premier Delegate Award, President of school chapter
-Youth and Government: Assembly Vice Chair '10, Assembly Speaker '11, winner of Outstanding Statesman award, passed my bill through model Congress, President of school chapter
-Mock Trial Team: school's top witness, took team to states, team co-captain
-People with Pals (penpal program in Spanish to kids in Ecuador): president of school chapter.
-Peer Leaders (school drugs/alcohol awareness team): elected VP
-Violin: private lessons for 14 years, Chamber Orchestra (elite ensemble) since freshman year
-I've had two violin students for the past year.
-Volunteering at local medical center

-Research internship at NYU Langone Medical Center lab for 2 summers; collected/coded data for post-stroke to improve effectiveness of recovery. Worked with mostly medical students and pre-med undergrads. Worked under the direction of primary investigator (PI) who is a doctor at Langone. Traveled alone to NYC daily, for many days a week each summer.

-Indian music (most important): performed over 20 concerts in the US, UK, and India, won over 30 awards and competitions, go to India every year to perform in the music festival, and performed with well known/notable artists. Featured in leading Indian newspaper twice in my high school career. I have a recording contract in India. Performed a benefit concert in the USA in this music style and raised $8,000 for two charities. Another benefit concert scheduled for November this year.
Will try to get an additional recommendation from an eminent music venue organizer in India, who has nice things to say about me.

Schools I'm applying to:
Harvard EA
Princeton
Columbia
MIT
Georgetown
Duke
Cornell
UPenn CAS

Please be honest. I really really really badly want Harvard but I know that's not realistic for anyone to hope for. Thank you!!

You have a very good shot at all of the schools listed.
Harvard: Good (EA helps)
Princeton: Good
Columbia: More than good
MIT: Good
Georgetown: Very good
Duke: Very good
Cornell: Very good
UPenn CAS: Very good

Just know that you’ll end up in at least one of the schools you’ve listed, presumably… You seem set on Harvard, but the school’s hard to chance for, regardless you seem like a good candidate.

Chance me back?

sure, could you message me a link?

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1222539-chance-urm-these-schools-thank-you.html</a></p>

You definitely have a great shot at any school you apply to. You’ll most likely get into at least one of these schools, so no need to worry. :)

Good luck! (:

thanks for the encouragement. any constructive criticism?

You’re definitely very qualified, I wouldn’t be surprised if you got into most of the schools on your list. At this point, the only thing you can do is make sure that you hit your essays out of the park.

Chance me? http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1208758-chance-international-brown-georgetown-tufts-etc.html</a></p>

Big Question: Intended Major?

Intended major: I’m shuffling between the unrelated fields of political science and pre-med at the moment -___- not sure. Why, do you have a suggestion?

Possibly a “secondary field” (Harvard’s version of a minor) in music.

(Asian) females have better chances if they are STEM oriented.

Harvard EA: Reach
Columbia: Reach
MIT: Reach
They are reach colleges for everybody (yes, even with 2400 and 800s on SAT IIs).

Princeton: I “think” you have better chances at Princeton. It “seems” that P likes performing art people. (My HS had multiple acceptances from P. They were either STEM females or performing art people.)

You know that premed isn’t a major at any reputable school, right? It’s simply a track; you need an actual major too.

Harvard: target
Princeton: target
Columbia: target
MIT: target
Georgetown: safety
Duke: low target
Cornell: safety
UPenn CAS: target

chance me http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1222766-chance-me-northwestern-cornell-ed-will-chance-back.html</a></p>

i’m aware that premed isn’t a major (that’s why i used the term “field” instead of “major” when addressing the question).
but thanks!

Is this a joke? Cornell is not a safety for anyone, and the rest are not targets for 99.9% of applicants. The only accurate one is Duke.

You have very good chances at all these schools; be aware that even qualified people like you (and people more qualified) get rejected, but people less qualified can get accepted. So it comes down to essays/recs/and, unfortunately for many, some element of luck.

^^ As stupid as these posts are and as ridiculous as it is that someone with these type of qualifications is making this type of post, the quoted post is spot on.
For someone like this, Cornell really is a safety.
Now, it shouldn’t be your only safety, but it is definitely below (purely in terms of selectivity) what your stats suggest you are capable of(again, purely in terms of selectivity).

So long as you seem social and normal in interviews (i.e. don’t act like a stereotypical asian/indian), show interest in the above schools and put effort into your application, you have as good a chance as anyone at any of these schools. The only weakness is your extra-curriculars.

“For someone like this, Cornell really is a safety.”

Believe me, Cornell is not a safety for anybody.

I have a legacy (dad) at Cornell, just to add to this growing debate :stuck_out_tongue: but that obviously doesn’t mean I’ll get in. I had 4 family members at Harvard but they were cousins/aunts. Would that help me in any way?

The schools you’re applying to are reaches for everyone!
Harvard EA: Reach
Princeton: Reach
Columbia: Reach
MIT: Reach
Georgetown: Target
Duke: Target
Cornell: High Target
UPenn: Low Reach

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1196782-chances-brown-will-chance-back.html</a></p>

That’s established; the question was whether I have good chances at my reach schools as compared to other applicants  I’ll chance back asap.
