If you guys know some statistics, you will find the difference of the cross-admit rates between any 2 of these 5 schools is not statistically significant. I think you can not validly claim Harvard has a higher cross admit rate than Stanford based on the data we have. The sample size is too small

I don’t think Stanford tries to avoid competing with MIT. Vice versa, you can say MIT tries to avoid competing with Stanford. I think it just happened that students going to engineering rarely posted on this thread. It might be interesting if we can find what fields these cross-admits are going to study.

In terms of engineering, Stanford knows how to pick the best students. Just look at the students Stanford picked in the past: the yahoo guys, the google guys, the inventor of microprocessors, the designer of internet protocol, … The list goes on and on.

That is how people abused statistics. I am more concerned about data biased towards the ‘rich’ all-rounded, rather than the ones who need finaid.

Quote from Harvardfan,
I agree with the statement about Stanford’s yield, but the fact that Stanford has fewer number of cross-admits is not surprising if you look at the these numbers:

Princeton:
SAT Critical Reading: 690 - 790 98%
SAT Math: 700 - 790 98%
SAT Writing: 690 - 780 98%

Yale:
SAT Critical Reading: 700 - 800 92%
SAT Math: 700 - 790 92%
SAT Writing: 700 - 790 92%

Harvard:
SAT Critical Reading: 700 - 800 98%
SAT Math: 700 - 790 98%
SAT Writing: 690 - 790 98%
Stanford:
SAT Critical Reading: 660 - 760 96%
SAT Math: 680 - 790 96%
SAT Writing: 660 - 760 96%

Stanford is 50-100 points (total) below HYP, which means less overlap with HYP and thus fewer number of cross-admits.

I think that this is complete false. Rutgers must have more cross-admits with HYP than Stanford does, since almost everyone applied to HYP applied to Rutgers as a safety school in New Jersey. It has nothing to do with SAT scores.

^^ Sorry, Stanford fan. I’ll let the numbers speak.

This biased result is similar to the one of last year, and Stanford will lose for sure as before, just not for the reason you gave. I am actually glad to see this. Only the top 150-200 students matters, like faraday who does not go after the names. BTW, what was your second choice, faraday?

My reasoning is based on SAT data and you don’t have any data to back your statement up.
It is a very simple concept. Let’s say if Stanford admits only students with 600-700 SAT and Harvard admits only people with 710-800, in that case there would be ZERO cross-admit.

Reason #1: the name
Reason #2: go back to reason #1. :-)

I partially agree with you on the standard Stanford follows. It is just that they don’t run Stanford like a magnet high school. They will try to get the top students, not as many as the HP do, and the rest on the lower scores in SAT. They create a class just like a good private high school, and everyone is happy. A good student in high school is still a good student in Stanford, unlike in P and M.

^^We are talking about the number of cross-admits, not who choose over whom. The latter could depend on name or reputation.

To ewho:

Harvard/Stanford was actually my second choice. I was a bit turnt off by the elitism of the ivies, which was why I chose MIT over Harvard/Princeton/Yale.

I actually feel a bit like a prestige grubber, for applying to so many top schools (HYPSMC), but back then, I was really worried I wouldn’t get in anywhere.

To Professor 101:
Stanford is the only school in the bunch that provides D1 athletic scholarships. This impacts the SAT scores of admits.
And Faraday: “turnt” ?

You will shine at MIT. curious: I believe that faraday was an international student?
