I know that they are all supposedly brilliant, but are they good teachers? I'm interested in studying math, and I am choosing between Harvard and Williams (where the professors are renowned as teachers). Do students enjoy their classes, and do they find their professors accessible?

My daughter said that her professors were as available as you want to them to be. They are REQUIRED to keep office hours to be available to students during that time. I didn’t get the idea they would impose themselves on you if you wanted to be left alone. But if you want help or consultation they were more than willing to provide it.

My S studied math at H. One prof was not a great teacher at all, but the majority were good to excellent and quite accessible. His DUS was very friendly and his thesis advisor was extremely supportive. He had a very good experience.

I can’t comment on math teachers at H or W, but I do know that the range of math courses you can take at Harvard is much greater. Some math students end up taking some grad classes as well.

^Indeed. That was the reason S did not apply to Williams, though he’d heard great things about the math department there.

My Ds have had great prof experiences, both in and out of class, but they haven’t been taking math. It’s my impression incidentally, that Williams may have the most extensive math curriculum of any LAC. Of course, it wouldn’t be close to the scope of a university that offers a graduate curriculum in Math.
