Harvard RD 2014 Thread

My parents almost didn’t let me either. Simply because it was too far away from home…but the funny thing is, we used to live in the Bay Area.

HAHA that’s what I kept telling myself after my rejection. I wasn’t met for Yale, I wasn’t a good fit, there was a reason, maybe I was supposed to go to different school blah blah at least it made me feel better!!

You people let your parents pick where you apply to college?

My parents aren’t choosing my schools per se but if they are not financially able or don’t want to pay for it, i have no choice!!

same as darkblademaster- it’s too far from home. I’m only allowed to go to school on the east coast. I didn’t apply to ANY midwest/west schools, but I did apply to 2 southern (duke and UVA)

^i’m the opposite haha!!

the closest school i applied to is more than halfway across the country from me

@cgarcia: No, I applied to whatever school I wanted to. But I do value my parents’ opinions.

@pigs: Did you apply to any international schools? (I see you’ve edited your location, lol)

@pigs-because you’re not in the northeast AKA best place in america
you know, one of the reasons (albeit a less significant one) I want to go to new england for school is that i LOVE being around political liberals  haha call me partisan

i’m excited about college because i believe that i will have a real culture-shock. i’ll probably see real “intelligence” for the first time in my life. sigh. ppl from states like mine are so intellectually deprived:(

My parents said top-flight LAC only and definitely no Harvard for undergraduate studies. I am multi-generation Harvard legacy, but everybody said it’s too big for a 17-year old. They love Faust but hate the endowment crisis. Will apply to grad program after 4 yrs at LAC.

Good luck to all.

I am like pigs. I live in a community in Canada that depends solely on the automotive industry, but my parents don’t work in it. My mom’s works in a bank and my Dad works in the US. So, no offense to anyone here at all if your parents work in the auto industry as labour workers (all of you are smart to even be on this site), but the children of all these auto workers have little intellectual ability.

It’s pretty annoying. I am SO EXCITED to go to the US for university. New experiences, the new American culture, it’s gonna be great. First time I too will be surrounded with intellectual people. And it’s not just that…I love sports. Without baseball/hockey/football my life is ruined, and the US is THE nation for sports and college sports will be great. I will get to socialize with diverse people, intellectual people, and some people who share my same passion for sports too.

I can’t find people like this in Windsor (my city). It’s either “study all day” or “play all day” or “smoke weed all day”. Can’t wait for the US! I love your country lol…don’t get me wrong Canada rocks, but it’s just my community that sucks.

^^ awww

good luck to all, whether or not harvard is your top choice.

personally, my parents didnt even want me to go to a top school. they really wanted me to go to a state school to study nursing. urgh… i want to be a doctor, not nurse. :D

^that sucks if u really wanna be a doc. my mom is just happy that we qualify for in-state tuition at UTexas at Austin and other Texas state schools. So, she says that I have more viable options to apply to, financially. (my dad works in texas, so he qualifies as a texas resident because of that one law/policy they have and I am “dependent” on him…since i’ll be under 18 when i go to university)

My dad on the other hand, when I told him I might apply to harvard just for the sake of applying…like I might as well, he got all excited like a 11 year old at Christmas. I told him that my chances would be very slim as an international applicant and such, but he was still caught up with “the prestige”. Who thought that I would be the one to figure out prestige isn’t what matters for undergrad (I am a med school hopeful by the way) and what matters is the education, opportunities, fit, and financial aspects? lol.

But yea. I’m excited. Not expecting to get in at Harvard, but who knows. I’m by far the best possible candidate from my school, and probably one of the better ones in my school district/area. But UT Austin is where I’m most likely going…but it still might be hard to get in, because of all the in-state kids they want.

But, I just want a good undergrad, with not a lot of financial issues, and go to med school without burden of previous debt. Then I’ll just go to w/e med school without any headaches.

Ive been to Windsor twice, just passing through. I kind of liked it, lol. Its hella weird that Ive been there before since I live in northern California

lol, I can tell you live in CA because you just used ‘hella.’ :)

^ we in SoCal, we dont say hella as much compared to NorCal folks like Xargon

That’s true. All of my friends who say it live in the Bay Area.

Hahaha, Missourians say hella :)

alot of my bestfriends in SoCal grew up in Norcal around Berkeley and Bay Area…

they would say things like:
hella
gouda (money)
cig nasty (cigarretes)

and my personal favorite:

FUGURTLY (fat ugly and hurt)

The only place my parents really wanted me to go was UNC. I did apply, but hopefully won’t end up there. The day I reject that school will be like apocalypse day in my entire family, haha. Probably 4 generations have been there, and we are a huuuuge basketball family (I kind of missed that gene though.)
