Hi all – wondering whether anyone has received an email reminder about the notification date? I got one for Columbia, but not from Harvard so far.
Harvard has YET to send out an email telling about notification date. We all know when it is already. I would assume that Harvard will send it out this upcoming Monday or a few days before March 31st
Thank you!
Also, does not getting an interview for an international student from a country with limited interviews) imply a rejection? @gibby – Request your inputs.
But Harvard is not going to accept someone because of their race and they aren’t going to reject someone for the same reason. Yes it becomes a factor as to whether you will be a good addition to the class they are trying to create, but it isn’t a huge deciding factor. If that makes sense
Yes, race is not a huge deciding factor but it can be a favorable factor. For example, the competition for admission is less fierce if you are not in the Asian pool for example. It is not to say that the competition isn’t fierce but you have slightly better odds. Also for @ivyhsparent , depending on the country for internationals, some anecdotes suggest that because of the limited availability, Harvard reserves interviews for the most promising applicants (meaning they pre-screen applications). However, that doesn’t mean that you are rejected, it just means that because of limited availability they cannot offer you an interview. Furthermore, as the admission process is “holistic”, the lack of interview will NOT hurt your application. Denying it after being offered one, however, might hurt.
@eugeinc Thanks for the reply. Ugh, I hope they do read it. I e-mailed it straight my admissions officer and practically begged her to read it. I opened up about so much stuff in there, and I had a rather significant application update in the letter. I have been dreaming of going to Harvard for so long. I cannot imagine being at any other school this fall. I’m so nervous for Thursday that I can’t think about anything else. I’m so NERVOUS!!!
@parisbarca77 Hey how did you get your admissions officer’s email?
@parisbarca77 Well, I hope your imagination expands a tad bit more, because the acceptance rate is predicted to dip below 5%.
I’m starting to question if race is truly a favorable factor in the holistic formula. I got rejected from Stanford even with competitive stats, ECs, LOCs, and even interned at Stanford last summer. I’m of Hispanic descent and legacy to boot.
@SD2020 Hispanic ethnicity doesn’t help as much because the pool for Hispanics is more competitive than that for other URMs.
@SD2020 Race differs holistically based on location as well. Stanford is a top school in an area with a high Latino population. As such, race for Latinos, while taken into account, will not matter as much as it would in other places. Northwestern, for example, is known for having a larger than usual consideration for URMs in general because of its location.
If it helps, I was waitlisted by UChicago despite being a URM and told I was a “shoo-in”. It’s why I’ve ignored such people from the beginning. It’s still a tough time getting into any school, especially in the hardest application year in history.
@aBitOfLuck @Nedcone - I hear you. What drives me crazy is when others assume you’re a “shoo-in” because of your race or legacy status. At least, if I hopefully get into HPY et al, nobody would say it’s only because he’s legacy.
Well, I can’t attest for other schools but I know that being a legacy at Harvard means that despite you get second looks, you are also expected to be at least, if not at all, much much more impressive than your parents since they expect you to be the son/daughter of those who had attended the school before hand. So legacy is kinda a double-edged sword. But hey, at least you are very impressive in your own right! I, myself, had to fight a struggling battle against stereotype and the Asian pool.
@SD2020 @Nedcone I think it’s misguided to tell anyone that (s)he is a shoo-in to an extremely competitive institution; it makes him/her feel doubly inadequate if not admitted.
@aBitOfLuck : You are a “shoe-in” if your last name ends with Gates, Jobs, Obama, Bush, Kennedy, etc.
@aBitOfLuck - my confidence sure took some heavy beating. I’m just glad the UCs gave me a lot of love.
@hola1997 - I hope not. My dad’s pretty impressive.
I do agree about the stereo-type regarding the Asian pool. I’m multi-racial.
@SD2020 : Anyways, congrats to your acceptance to UCs!
Maybe if luck favors us we might be able to meet on Visitas
@seattlechick Harvard can and does use ethnic background as a consideration factor. It’s not a violation of the 14th Amendment.
@ivyhsparent I’m pretty sure they are going to send out the notification email to us early next week. Thats what they did for last year students
@T26E4 I don’t mean that it’s not considered, but it’s not a major component and no one will be accepted or rejected being of it.
