[] GPA:4.6 W/ 3.9 UW
[] Rank: 7/176 (I know it doesn't matter anymore, but I really do not understand how i got below the top 5)
[] Other stats: 5 AP U.S., only one I took so far
[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Essays: The Common App one was just ok (Brown only got that one and I was rejected from there), and my extra one was one of the best things I ever wrote.
[] Teacher Recs: Pretty good, one great, from my two favorite teachers and my principal.
[] Counselor Rec: good
[] Hook (if any): interesting life story w/ ups and downs
[/ul]Location/Person:[ul]
[] State or Country: USA
[] School Type: Public
[] Ethnicity: Caucasian (I'm a European mutt!)
[] Gender: Female
[] major strength/weakness: essay/math SAT scores
[li] why you think you were accepted/rejected/defered: I think my interview and extra essay are what got their attention. I had an amazing intellectual discussion during my interview, one of the best conversations I have had in a while. Beyond the shock and excitement of being accepted to Harvard, I am happy to know that the admissions committee actually chose ME, not some numbers.
[/li][/ul]Other Factors: Prayer ;).

Congrats to Harvard '09 acceptees! To those who didn't get in-- I'm sure that you will be successful and accomplished at the college you chose to attend. It's not the school, but what you make of the experience. Best of luck to all! :-)

[] Other stats: 5 on AP Calc BC, Bio, US History
[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Essays: Not as good as they could have been ... and probably confusing considering that I was going through my Faulkner-multiple-narrator-multiple font stage ... hahaha, that's right, one of my essays actually had four or five different fonts ...
[] Teacher Recs: Solid, but I doubt extremely spectacular
[] Counselor Rec: Solid
[] Hook (if any):
[/ul]Location/Person:[ul]
[] State or Country: New Jersey (hahahaha)
[] School Type: Public
[] Ethnicity: Chinese
[] Gender: Male
[] major strength/weakness: I'm the prototypical Chinese male applicant. Strong creds in math and science. Far weaker to nonexistent creds in everything else.
[li] why you think you were accepted/rejected/defered: Eh, it happens.[/li][/ul]Other Factors: Maybe certain parts of my application were incongruous. I mean, even though my teacher recs, my counselor rec, and my stats point toward mathematics, I didn't even have one of those 'passion in this subject' essays. That, and my interviewer and I talked more about world economics and trading policies than everything else. Meh.

[] Essays: It was a look at what goes through my head and how I read the audience during my favorite part of my magic show.... but I didn't let them know it was a magic show till the end, so it played off very well.
[] Teacher Recs: My AP physics teacher wrote stunning things, and though I didn't get to read the one my AP english teacher wrote, she read me one section of it that was so glowing, I had to wear sunglasses.
[] Counselor Rec: Also excellent
[] Hook (if any): I run my own magic entertainment business. I'm the first musician at my school in 47 years to be accepted to the All Eastern Honors ensembles (Chorus... I'm a Bass II). I'm an All County fencer. I do cancer research at the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratories. I'm an active leader in my school's band, chorus, and the theatre program. I've won multiple blue ribbons handling my dog in Agility (a playground-like competitive obstacle course).... The list really does go on.
[ /list][ b]Location/Person:[ /b][ list]
[] State or Country: New York (...I'm on Long Island... that hurt me)
[] School Type: Small, public. 109 kids in my graduating class.
[] Ethnicity: White, Jewish... haha I'm sure that helped me too
[] Gender: Male
[] major strength/weakness: Quick learner/Kryptonite
[li] why you think you were accepted/rejected/defered: I think I was deffered because my short answer sucked, and I didn't send too much supplementary material. Guidance told me that a school like Harvard did not want to get my music CDs, art slides, etc, if I wasn't going to be a music or art major. After my deferral, I sent them an updated resume and a better short answer. A couple weeks before final decision time, an admissions officer called my school and asked for a recording of my singing, so I promptly recorded one and sent it in. I'm not sure exactly why I was waitlisted after all this.[/li][/ul]Other Factors: Fanstastic alumnus interview. Also, when I visited the campus, took the tour and info session, etc, they never took my name down. I went to the front desk and asked if I had to "sign in" to show I was here, but they said they didn't do that. Seems strange....

Idk... I think I'd be a happier person at Brown anyway...

Harvard doesn't care about demonstrated interest. Harvard has the highest yield in the country so doesn't accept students based on whether the students have indicated they're likely to attend. That's also why H asks alumni interviewers not to ask students what colleges they've applied to.
