There will be a Harvard Rep coming to my school next week, and I was wondering how informative these sessions are. The set up would be the rep sitting down with a couple of interested kids in a pretty small room and answering any questions anyone might have. Last year, when our school said a rep was coming, it was a Harvard student. Sure, it was informative etc, but there wasn't a chance to establish a relationship with Harvard. The downside, I would be missing a class to attend this session. Is it worth it? It might sound like a stupid question to some of you, but I am really wondering how informative these reps are. Thanks for your input in advance!

I would think it worthwhile to go to the meeting you describe. You can make the meeting more worthwhile by preparing for it beforehand by reading Harvard admission office publications (including the website) and other information about Harvard and thinking about interesting (to you) questions that aren't answered by what you have read.

My daughter met with the Princeton rep about a week ago. Only she and one other student showed up. It was dreadful - the rep was young, inexperienced, and not an engaging speaker. They all basically sat there, and the 2 students tried to ask questions, but it was tediously boring for 45 minutes!

This week, she and about 5 other students met with the rep from Harvard. He was much older and more experienced. Not only did she get a lot of info about Harvard that she needed, he was helpful about the application process in general. He was the person who will be reading & processing their applications. She was very glad she attended the session.

So - it all depends on the rep!

when the rep came to my school, i thought it was extremely helpful. she was really nice, very personable, and answered the questioned that were asked as opposed to just spitting out the generic stuff we hear everyday. it also helped because she's the one that's going to end up reading my application, so its just a leg up for you if you can stay after maybe even for 30seconds so that they can put a name to a face when they pick up ur application. they'll remember you.

You can always bring homework to the session, so you can use the time to your benefit if the rep turns out to be a snore. :)

And they do remember you ... whether it's positive or negative. A chance to sit with an admissions officer of a school that you are interested in should not be passed up.
