What is a good height for a Harvard rowing recruit (6' 2",6' 3", etc.)? Also, what 2k is needed by the end of winter (junior) to have a high chance at being recruited? My academics are very good.

Go on the Harvard team page and look at the times. Stats(like height) may be posted as well.

They are, but I was wondering about what a generally acceptable heavyweight recruit height is. And their 2k times are not on there.

Above 6’3" with a sub-6:20 erg.

So 6’ 3" is generally considered to be too short?

How about those same stats for lightweight woen recruits? thanks!

Pull the time and the height won’t be an issue.

@beenthere2 that is not true at all, D1 schools tend to require a height of 6’4", and a good time for harvard or any top tier rowing school to look at you would bet a 1:30 500m, 6:25 2000m, and 21:20 6000m, also what is your weight

As OldScarecrow says, 6:20 or better for a 2K.

@rower95
My point is that you can’t change your height, but you can change your erg time. So if you pull a great erg time and have a relatively low weight, a few inches of the ‘required’ height become a non-issue. For instance, I know a male LW rower who was heavily recruited by ivy HW teams (low 6:20s erg time and below 6’3"). And as you said, weight is a factor. Also, keep in mind that Harvard, CAL, and Washington have the highest standards rowing wise and heavily recruit overseas.

height is not an issue, my mate got into harvard (i think a scholarship maybe not) for rowing and he pulled close to a 6:00 and was around the 6 foot mark, maybe shorter. But he did row for Australia in the U21 Junior World Champs and is 18.

I will offer only one-cent since I am far, far from an expert on the subject. This is only what I’ve heard and read . . .

For top boats, height is an issue. Not the one deciding factor. Just part of the equation.

Having a great Erg time is of course very important but so is good technique and teamwork.

Part of the speed of a boat comes from the mechanics, efficiency and harmony of the four or eight rowers. And it is thought, I believe, that rowers of similar height contribute better to the synchronized arc and flow through all phases of the stroke.

If you want to see a visual example of this, just watch new rowers on a slide who have never worked together. It is a Keystone comedy.

pH:
No athlete competes in ANY sport at an ivy league on a scholarship. Never. No matter what anyone says.

It IS possible that your mate got an ADMISSIONS BOOST to help get into college; but the financial arrangement will always be based on financial aid.

Thank you for the answers. What kind of summer camps to Ivy Coaches recommend or look for when recruiting? Also, when should these times be achieved by in order to be a potential recruit. Lastly, does it affect the equation if i have a near 4.0 gpa and good SAT scores?

For the last question–most rowers have decent to great academic stats so you will not see much advantage with “good scores” . But they will alow your application to get through admissions IF you are recruited by the coach–i.e. on his “list” of top recruits.

As noted above, crew at Harvard recruits heavily internationally, and loves junior national champions. Take a look at the rowing roster for last year’s freshmen (gocrimson.com) to see how many heavyweight rowers are from Britain, South Africa, Australia, and New Zealand.

I hope that you will answer me soon :)

Might I suggest that you email the Harvard coach AT Harvard with your letter of interest and stats – this is a public message board that I do not think the Harvard coach checks for recruits. Start at [Harvard University](http://www.Harvard.edu/) and go to Athletics and to men’s crew to get the coach’s name, his email address and to fill out the recruiting form.

Are you graduating this Spring? If so, you may be a litle late for Sept 2013 recruitment but it is still definitely worth a try – have you put an application in to Harvard Admissions? If you are a junior and graduating in Spring 2014, your timing is excellent to start the recruiting process now. Good luck!

Yeah I am now in contact with Harvard. I have also grown and am now 6’ 4". I have maintained very good academics and expect an SAT score at least 2300+ (I got a very high PSAT score in the high 220s). Hopefully it all work out.
