Harvard SCEA Class of 2020 Applicant Thread

It almost makes me glad thanksgiving break is over. School gives me something to distract myself with for these last few anxiety-ridden days.

@tuty143 @magic1234 I’ve gone through that conversation for about 6 years now, haha. Maybe if I studied for my classes instead of reading books about psychopathy/neuroscience, I would have had a chance.

creates a college that is based upon reading awesome books.
It is called: Book Hoarder University. Tuition can be payed in B&N/Strand Bookstore gift cards. Diploma=priceless. You will have read so many books in four years that you’ll basically become a self-proclaimed genius.
Majors include:

  1. The Vladdy Nabokov: Why is Strong Opinions such a beautiful piece of non-fiction?
  2. The Oliver Sacks: Man, I want to study psychology now.
  3. The Haruki Murakami: Talking cats is a theme, I think.
  4. The Stephen King: In case of a serial killer mishap, I’ll be prepared.
    Who’s in?

Could someone post the links to the admissions news articles again?

I just hope the harvard website is telling the truth and the absence of an interview for an international student wont mean anything ominous :frowning: :frowning: :frowning: :frowning: :frowning:

Honestly though, on the bright side, we are worried about getting into the best university (in my humble opinion) and most elite university in the nation. Other people are worried about even getting into college! We will all be attending great schools next year regardless of the decisions Dec. 10th

I took a peek in the UPenn thread, and guys, we’re lacking. We have a mission, as the über nerds, to thread on; the goal is to fulfill pi in page numbers (3.14159 x 10^2)!

Someone mentioned Harry Potter earlier and I honestly wished I was part of the fandom. I just never read the books or watched the movies and I don’t want to seem like a poser :((

@QueenN22 DO IT! It’s never too late to read Harry Potter! I will personally send you the books to motivate you (…force you) to read them. I promise you, no one will see you as a poser. It’s time for you to come to the wizard side; we have butterbeer.

@QueenN22 I never read the books and only just watched the series recently (and embarrassingly enough when I visited Harry Potter World couldn’t even remember what diagon alley was!) I understand your pain girl.

@schroscat ok it’s like freaky how much we have in common. We both play flute AND you’re obsessed with neuroscience and learning about psychopaths?! I literally have three different books on psychopathy alone and two different textbooks on neuroscience

@flautamagica Have you read The Psychopath Inside? I just finished it the other day and I’m obsessed. I have a problem with memoirs about psychopathy; the text combined both anecdotal evidence and ALSO NEUROSCIENCE AND, UGH, it was beautiful. I squealed in class when the “let’s examine brain chemistry” chapter came up. I wrote my Original Oratory for speech about the wisdom of psychopaths. I may or may not have posed How to Succeed’s J.P. Finch as a psychopath. Maybe. (…or not.)

@schroscat I haven’t read that one yet, but I’ll have to check it out! I read one with a study about Ted Bundy and how he chose his victims and it’s this UBER creepy thing where they found out psychopaths can tell someone is a “good victim” (i.e. has been victimized a lot/is weaker) just by watching them walk down a hallway on video

@flautamagica I find it insane (haha, punny) how some of the most successful CEOs pose psychopathic traits. Kevin Dutton’s The Wisdom of Psychopath literally outlines how psychopathy isn’t a matter of being a serial killer nowadays, but rather, being successful. But then again, Ted Bundy…that man, oh that man. One of my favorite quotes from the book is that psychopaths “do emotions by numbers”, which is super freaky, but it also makes sense. Gah, psychology makes me so happy.

Dang this thread has been officially revived!!!

@schroscat same here, for awhile I was thinking of even becoming a psychiatrist and doing research on psychopathy. There’s still so much we don’t know! Something I found very interesting is that surgeons tend to have psychopathic traits and can even turn their emotions on/off (obviously this would be helpful so they wouldn’t freak out under stressful situations).

@Sajidur4 Thanks. For identification purpose, do they need to put down any ID information other than the student name?

@flautamagica Funny you mentioned that–I actually made that point in my speech! I connected the psychopathic traits that would make a surgeon much more effective to everyday situations; imagine turning all your emotions off before a big exam or presentation…wouldn’t it be so much easier to just “get it over with”? All that stress triggers the amygdala to freak out, and then the brain is in panic mode, and then your entire body is in panic mode…it’s all a huge mess. Yay stress!
Everyone has a little psychopath inside of them (whether it be lying, grandiose sense of worth, or even lack of empathy) and yet, there still isn’t a set criteria for a diagnosis. It just goes to show how intricate the brain is.

How is everyone feeling today? I’m feeling nervous and I’m in a bad mood.

@schroscat just wondering, I noticed you said you submitted 2 flute solos for the music portfolio. Which ones did you submit? I recorded Fantaisie by Georges Hue and Concertino by Cecile Chaminade

@tuty143 I am extremely nervous as well! I keep imagining clicking on the status update and either seeing the congratulations or the sorry to inform you message…I swear I’m developing OCD
