Harvard SCEA Class of 2020 Applicant Thread

@magic125 What state?

So this just happens:

I’m resting on my bed feeling frustrated by the loud noises my three other roommates are making on the other side of our dorm room…and then all of a sudden I hear something spill followed by the barrage of curse words….then I hear one of them say “he’s as sleep” so am like…of course they messed up some of my stuff, right? I wake up and walk to the study and theres orange juice spilled al over my macbook pro….obviously I’m infuriated (to say the least), I snatch it away from them and try to clean it before any of the liquid messes with the circuits in the computer, and thankfully it still works….then get this, I receive an EMAIL, and guess who from?? The Admissions Office at HARVARD….so I’m like WTF?? and I open it and it says your portal has been updated…no lie.
I log into my portal in like a fraction of a second, and it says blah blah blah theres an update…so my heart starts racing and I just tap the scroll pad to open the link….then in big letters…”Congratulations! You have been accepted….class of 2020!!) And I’m like “NO-EFFING-WAY!” and I start reading the whole thing….but apparently there’s no financial aid package and my heart sinks then, I get an email shortly after this saying that I shall get my financial aid package in March along with the RD Applicants, once I have sent in the necessary documents and such…So I breathe a sigh of relief thinking how and why is this all possible?? Then the darnest thing happens, I hear a garbage truck driving across the road outside my room…then I realise i’m still on my bed, still in my PJ’s…and all my other roommates are still asleep…. then I’m like awwwwww sh$%#%$%t……Can anyone relate to this?? I’m assuming your hearts skipped a few beats while reading this (lols don’t worry too much) so i’m just going to say some random stuff so yall don’t see where it ends until you reach the end and blah blah blah, but I really don’t want to spoil it…perhaps I should end the paragraph with something about my counsellor being contacted, so that people who just look at the last sentence think its legit about confirmation of TRANSCRIPTS (See what I just did there?) But in all honesty I wish you guys the best!! And don’t worry you will all get into the school of your dreams, whether it’s Harvard or not!! :slight_smile:

CAPS used to emphasise key words.

^literally what just happened…

@ozymandias2020 brilliant. Have you considered politics? Lol

@ozymandias2020 you just gave me a heart attack, followed by a pang of confusion, followed by a feeling of “what the hell just happened?” Great story, ahah. :slight_smile:
Almost 7 days left!

@ozymandias2020 lol, I knew that it was a dream from the start. That is possibly because Iranian movie directors overuse this tactic.
Two reactivating questions:
1-list the top three languages that you want to learn during your lifetime.
2- list the top seven countries you like to visit.

@ozymandias2020 You made me laugh so hard. I L-O-V-E YOU !!!

Just talked to the admissions office and December 10th is in fact the release date! Also this whole contacting counselors thing is new to the building so they don’t really know what that is about

^^my counselor called confirmed December 10th 5-5:30. Also people who didn’t get grade requests no worries, it’s not a sign either way. The admissions officer said they just need more info from some students in addition to previous report cards.

By when do those contacted need to turn in their 1Q grrades to Admissions? As in, after this date, I don’t have to worry about being asked for my grades.

@Soheils speaking of Iranian movie directors, Mohsen Makhmalbaf is in town right now for the Singapore International Film Festival!! :smiley: I think he’s receiving an award and they’re screening a few of his films as well :slight_smile:

So I just called admissions as well to find out about interviews. She said they are still conducting interviews and will be all the way up to the day before decisions are announced which is on December 10th.
She said if everyone does not get an interview, eventhough they are trying their best to schedule everyone for one, it means they have enough information in the applicants file to make a decision.
So not sure if that is good or bad for me as I haven’t received a request for one

I keep getting really sad about getting deferred and it hasn’t even happened yet lol!

@karakoram I have seen no movie from that guy, lol.
I also have a question from you : can you guys understand older versions of Japanese? To what extent?

Did Harvard contact you or your counselors to request the grade report?

HI EVERYONE serious post. In case you haven’t heard of this fantastic resource, the “common data set” is the totality of all data any school has gathered about any and everything. Every school has to submit one to the government each year, and they are rich with information if you can decipher them. For instance, scroll down a few pages and you can see EXACTLY what said schools consider in admission and detailed ACT/SAT reports. You can even scroll down to see various data on financial aid awarded.

Here is harvard’s most recent common data set. (2013-2014)

@Soheils I’ve seen Kandahar! Beautiful film.

Depends on how far back you go, I guess. I studied poems and literature from around the Heian era onwards (when the Hiragana syllabary was created) during my time in a Japanese school, but even those were usually full of archaic features and vocabulary that made them quite hard to understand. Ironically, even older versions of Japanese (which I’m assuming contained fewer Chinese loanwords) like the Old Japanese used in the Kojiki, Nihon Shoki etc were written entirely in classical Chinese characters, so they’re unreadable and almost impossible to understand for the vast majority of modern Japanese speakers.

What about Persian/Farsi? Can you understand texts written in Old or Middle Persian?

@karakoram
Thank you for the information. It is strange that Japanese changed. I always thought that languages with an old script change very slightly, unless their country is invaded, which was prevented by winds in the case of Japan.
We can understand Persian texts from the last 15 centuries with very little help, but the intelligibility decreases significantly if you look at pre-islamic texts. While The grammar is completely unchanged, many of the more complex, composite words have been replaced with Arabic words that are much simpler. Still, we can understand middle Persian and pahlavi given enough time. Old Persian is almost unintelligible outside of simpler sentences.
Fortunately , we can read the works of poets like rumi and ferdowsi as early as elementary school, which is what matters.

Hey guys,
@Sajidur4 hahahah actually I wanna be the president of Kenya one day lol, good guess :wink:

@schroscat Thanks hahaha good luck! :slight_smile:

@Soheils Nice powers of deduction haha :)>-
1 French(Already learnt), Kiswahili(Already learnt), and perhaps Spanish or Russian lol not sure…
2 New Zealand, Russia, Antarctica(Don’t know if this qualifies), Turkey, Japan, Italy, Madagascar.

@AngelaW98 All the best! :slight_smile:

By the way guys, I know most of you are really anxious right now about decisions but just think about this for a second…In these remaining eight days, you are neither accepted(of course) BUT you aren’t deferred or rejected either…so just think about what that means…when you go to sleep you still have your fantasy in tact…anything is possible and you can dream of your Harvard roommate and classes and future, because it is still valid! So enjoy the remaining days, that’s what I’m doing…enjoying the final moments of absolute possibility. Lol I don’t wanna sound like some irritating hope babbler but just something to consider ;))
